Emporia State University unveiled its goals for the coming year as well as a new marketing plan at the general assembly Tuesday afternoon.
The new marketing campaign, “Empowered by E,” builds on the ‘Power E’ logo and is part of the Engaging Excellence plan for ESU. Billboards showing ESU students participating in sports and students in class have been placed in Johnson County, Topeka and Wichita over the past week as part of the campaign.
ESU President Michael Lane said it’s going to take a different marketing campaign to bring in students from those areas compared to trying to bring in students from a less populated area.
“Our research has told us that many people do not have an image of ESU, so this campaign is designed to begin to develop that image,” Lane said. “What do we mean by ‘Empowered by E?’ The power to change lives for the better. ESU is a first-tier university, and professors care about student success are all meanings of ‘Empowered by E.’”
Lane said ESU also needs to position itself to take advantage of the graduate program growth and opportunities. He told ESU faculty and staff at the assembly that the university will also look at adding more master’s degree programs.
Lane said afterwards that he doesn’t know specifically which additional degrees might be added, but said ESU will conduct research to determine which programs are needed in the state. And it might be that a program in the state is needed and ESU will be the first to offer it, Lane said.
He also spoke about new admissions standards that the Kansas Board of Regents will implement in high schools in 2015. Under the new rules, students must complete the pre-college or Kansas Scholars curriculum with at least a 2.0 grade point average, and either earn an ACT score of 21 or higher, earn a combined SAT score of 980 or higher, or rank in the top third of their high school graduating class.
Lane said that ESU has an opportunity to offer dual credit courses for high school students to help high schools meet these goals.
He also said ESU is a tremendous asset to the community because of its faculty and staff. Lane said ESU will get the message out that its students will graduate and find jobs.
Lane also touched on other points during the assembly, including new priorities for 2011 to ensure the university continues to move forward. Among the goals:
• Increasing the average ACT score of incoming freshmen by one point in five years.
• Developing goals to access the effectiveness of first-year experience programs.
• Increasing the number of departmental first-year experience programs.
• Reviewing and possibly modifying student life programs to coordinate with first-year experiences.
• Addressing the academic needs of undeclared students and increasing first- to second-year retention by 2 percent over five years.
• Assessing the quality of degree programs.
• Analyzing future needs and growth opportunities for new offerings, both undergraduate and graduate, including long-distance education.

We all know the state is managing by crisis now, and what implications this has for ESU. Good to see Dr Lane doing something positive about enrollment.

Would like to see President Lane leave. Horrible personality and communication skills. About time ESU has done some marketing and attempt for more students.

sail, don't get me started on Main Street versus Chamber efforts.
They both should be involved in this crusade, but it's up to the University to lead it. And they,(ESU leadership) have been lax in marketing lately.
