I am saddened to hear Coburns is closing! As a former Emporian, Coburns is my favorite place to eat breakfast when I come home. They have the best biscuits and gravy. You will be missed.

I noticed it has been lacking in customers for quite awhile. I am glad Emporia is getting some new places to eat, but I wish our local economy was strong enough to support old and new businesses alike. Coburns will be missed.

Good luck to Jeff and Brenda....two people who tried to make a living doing what they loved I know this is going ot be rough. Maybe they will be able to make the catering business take off and this will all work out for the best!!! They catered an event for me and people still talk about how good the food was!!!

Did they even take credit/debit cards? It seems like they didn't one time I was there, but maybe the machine was broken that day.

My experience with the joint was:
Taste = Ok
Prices = Little High
Portions = Too Small
Menu = Ok
Drive-Thru Speed = Not Fast

McD's or Burger King will win every time against those kinds of stats. Maybe that Italian place (now in a motel) could move to the Coburn's location and get more traffic. I forget that place is even over there in its current location.

I hear you HenryVIII, last time I ate there you could just about see through the hamburger patty on their 1/4 pounder. During the holidays we had family visit from Houston, Texas, the lady at the counter was beyond rude to my cousin, I was later told it was the owner, I was just floored she would act like she did, wonder if that has anything to do with them closing down? Also I think they made their menu choices too large, "keep it simple stupid."

When any business closes our whole town loses. Good luck to the Coburn's and to their employees.

I hope everything works out for all of you.

What all did she do/say that was rude?

I don't know her, but was introduced to her once. At that time she wasn't being fussy, but maybe it's because someone in our group knew her.

This is indeed sad news that another Emporia business is closing. Jeff and Brenda always supported the youth of Emporia whenever there were fundraisers, advertising or coupons needed. I hope that the wonderful catering will continue and have the support needed to succeed. Fast food chains are OK, but nothing beats the locally owned and operated "mom and pop" businesses that are so often forgotten about and forced out of business. I personally will miss Brenda, Jeff, their staff, and the delicious cheeseburgers. R.I.P. Coburn's-- you will be missed!

Henry, you meanness and cynicism epitomize what is wrong with this sad, Puritanical, dying little town. I'm very sad to lose Coburn's--it's a great community diner.

reddog (K. B. Thomas Jr.) says...

This is a huge loss to Emporia. The food, service and people were great. A chain will come in and take over this location and the money will go out of town.

My mom was sad when I shared this news with her. She lives in another State and our broasted chicken place shut down in the late 80's back home. She loves Coburns broasted chicken. It's always our first stop after I pick her up from the airport =(

eccentriceric (anonymous) says...

this is sad. the trend in emporia is for every new restaurant or business opens at least one closes in the same few months. The new Braums and Freddy's just opened now we loose Coburns. I used to go there but i think the prices are just a bit too high. But the food was great. I think it was when Popeyes opened we lost Taco Tico. I wish we had a new Taco Tico or Taco Johns or the like. Taco Bell gets old after awhile.

I must agree, food was good. Service was not so great. I myself do not feel saddened in anyway that they are closing. I ate there once and never returned.

"Meanness and cynicism"? I guess I'm not entitled to an opinion... I was just explaining why Coburns never got my business. I guess that's "mean"... whatever, weirdo.

Everyone has the right to their opinion !

Truer words were never spoken.

Sometimes when you see someone down it's better to give them a hand up.

At the very least, step over them instead of kicking them in the head.

There is another saying i am fond of:

Opinions are like a-holes. Everyone has one. Some are just bigger and stinkier than others.

Of course, heeh heeh, that's just mine.

I personally have never had bad service at Coburns, they have always gone out of their way to keep our drinks filled and see if we needed anything. It was a nice family atmosphere. I guess everyone has a bad day so if someone had bad service I'm sure it wasn't intended to be that way. I will miss Coburns and Jeff and Brenda. Great people who donated a lot to the community of Emporia and other causes. No wonder this town is nearly a ghost town, all of you same people just sit on the internet and whine all day with what is wrong with everything.

Local_Hispanic (Vic Rodriguez) says...

I was really shocked to hear that they were closing. Brenda has always been nice when I would go there. And their burgers reminded me of the old Vista burgers. I think Freddy's are a little high and really thin. I would compare 2 Freddy patties to 1 Coburns. I wish Brenda and Jeff lots of luck.

Emporia needs more jobs to keep more local businesses from closing or residents from moving away. Lowes, Vanity Fair, Target maybe even Fanestils would be great to bring in. I still say that we could use a Waffle House or IHOP on the east side where the old BK used to be. JMO

Best of luck to Jeff and Brenda. We enjoyed our visits to Coburns!

To the posters asking why see the newer article in the Gazette. And they did not own the building/lot so won't be making a bundle off that corner.
