Emporia police don’t see a pattern behind the influx of recent robberies, but Emporia Police Chief Gary Smith does have a theory about the reason behind the increase.
The economy may be driving this, Smith said.
“And it’s stupid,” he said. “It’s a high risk proposition. If they get caught they could get put away for a quarter century.”

I think the gazette has hit a new low with the picture for this article. It looks like the National Enquirer has some competition. So sad.

I wonder if Smith read yesterdays blogs to come up with that conclusion?

smith, once again proves my point, he is a idiot
if he thinks that they could get a quarter of a century, (thanks 25 years for those who cant find a job) he needs to just think back about all the others that have been arrested or charged and let go with only a slap on their hand by the worthless county attorney we have in lyon county,,am I negative about him,? yes I am, he lets murderers go, with a small fine, and a lot of other people are walking the streets because of that fool, what will it take to replace him?

The cause is as plain as the nose on one's face. It's been all over the news the last few days. Something Sarah Palin tweeted spurred and incited all these robberies ;-)

There is no entrance exam for the school of hard knocks. People end up doing 5 years in prison for $ 36 and some individual serving packets of grated parmesan cheese.
Not a good risk-reward calcuation.

Rash of robberies? Donut shop, cut rate motel, Burger joint, and a pizza delivery driver? We're not talking Clyde Barrows here folks, we're dealing with cowards. The list of targets confirms this. When they get to prison, they'll be punks too.

Flush. I have to wonder why every EPD story you go after the cops. Maybe in your experience they ticked you off or something?

Don't blame the police chief or the county attorney. The state of Kansas can't afford to build more prison space so judges are just paroling more and more and more. That's where the slap on the wrist comes from. Thank your vote for Brownback.

During WWII, the men marched off to war, the women went to work in factories and the children were provided a key to the house on a string around their neck. The latchkey child was borne. Eliminate the latchkey child and eliminate the need for additional prison space. But that would mean holding parents responsible for the children they bring into the world. Heaven forbid that ever happening. We have spent too many years engrossed in our own personal desires to accept being held responsible for our responsibilities. Blame the schools, blame the daycare centers, blame the social workers, blame the cops, blame the courts but don't point your fingers at the parents. Society had dirt all over it's face yet we refuse to look into the mirror for fear of what we might see.
