After her husband passed away in 2009, Jenell Tebbetts considered moving to Texas or North Carolina but she talked herself into staying in Emporia.
She is glad she did. The community has been good to her for four decades so now she wants to give back by serving as a city commissioner.
“This is the most generous community I’ve seen in my life,” Tebbetts said. “Just look at all the fundraisers we have for sick relatives or accident victims with people willing to help out. How do you get better than that?”
Tebbetts, a salesperson for Genesis Health Club, is one of four city commission candidates that have filed so far to try to win three empty seats in the April 5 election.

Emporia's real test lies in it's respect for minority opinion. The City Commission should be a small hard core of common agreement surrounded by a variety of individual differences but, because of meetings in the morning, afternoon and night very few people of different view points are able to serve and this needs to change so that every individual has equal rights to serve. I think there are extraordinary possibilities in ordinary folks and should't that be what our local government should aspire to? I wish that citizens would follow the voting records of our Commissioners like they do pro football games.

reddog, that was a sorry, stupid comment about Jenell, and YES you knew what you were saying.. I dont think you made the same comment about solis when he was running, thankfully, he lost, yes solis would of played the race card whenever he could if he had won. Jenell will be a GREAT commissioner and I dont see her even thinking that way, she is above that, Yes I have know Dan and Jenell for many years, and yes Dan would be so proud of her as he was in everything she was involved in, and she was involved in a lot for the bertterment of Emporia, and she did it because she wanted to, that's just her!! Good Luck dear woman, but you have already won!! in my book

i can normally be counted on to jump on old reddogs posts on here, (really hate the "please go to" posts, so I was pleasantly surprised to see his above.
I see no semblance of racism in his post, not too sure about the two posts that follow his.
I only know Jenell in passing, hope to get to know her and her views better before the election, but I can't imagine that she would disagree or be angry with anything that reddog posted.

I admire anyone running for political office in these trying times. We need people like Jennel that has a banking background. Her bank never made a sub-prime loan. This kind of conservatism is the ism we need at the local level. I just have this gut feeling that things are not as good as they seem in local government and the likes of a banker can rat them out. I also belive that the present City Management wants to expand the government.

The housing slump adds up to lower valuation which I told our City and County people. It's a long way from being over but, there are some isolated good buys. When you buy a home in this economy you are betting on the future of Emporia. Tomorrow's wealth is being born today. A lot of people went belly up in the 1980's. I think things were tougher because interest rates went to 21% and it will happen again as the Federal Reserve keeps printing money. I think the only way to fight higher prices is to buy gold, silver and good buys in the housing market. The wild card on local Real Estate is electing common people that realize we must cut back drastically--I am talking about pay and jobs. Jennel step up to the plate and hit a home run--were counting on you. You can do it, you must do it or this town is going in the toilet and old folks on fixed incomes will take what the white shoe shine boys call a haircut.

Let's face it.
reddogs post was unfortunate, and it happens. Red, you don't put down a rumor by posting it on these forums. gossip is gossip, some in this town take it for fact.
i know someone who has to be one of the biggest gossips in town, she knows the dirt on everyone else in town and isn't afraid to share it with anyone who will listen. Most avoid her, they are afraid of what she will say about them after they leave her presence. One of these days someone who has been hurt by her gossip will ask her about her imprisoned daughter to her face. All of her friends talk about it. Then she may feel the the sting that comes from gossip.
We are all guilty of repeating stuff, myself included. The best way to stop a rumor is to not repeat it.
And let's judge our candidates on the issues, not gossip.
Off my soapbox now.
