Polar Plunge raises money for special olympics

Mimes, super heroes and pirates took the plunge today to raise money for Special Olympics Kansas.
Emporia's Polar Plunge raised about $27,000 and had a larger turnout than last year.
Jana Fornelli, senior vice president of development for Special Olympics Kansas, said 171 people plunged into Mouse Lake. Last year 96 people plunged.
"It was frigid this year," said Lyndsey Balkenhol, a member of the Village Mimes team.
The temperature outside was 50 degrees, and the water was measured at 48 degrees.
The other side of the lake was covered in ice.
Village Mimes, a group of six teachers from Village Elementary School, took home the award for best costume.

I have plunged all 5 years it has been done in Emporia. Even though it was the warmest ever, it still was a shock. It really is a lot of fun!

I have done it for four years now and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I even got my kids interested in this cause.
I had a really good costume designed, but I just couldn't decide weather or not this was the right place to come dressed as a rock. Everyone in attendace would have gotten a chance to see what they are going to look like. I probably should have gone ahead and done it since our fine Mayor was one of the judges: )
