Winter Farmers Market Saturday

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

The Emporia Farmers Market is Saturday and promises a wide array of goods and foods just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The market will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 701 Commercial St. It will feature half-priced apples and local honey, along with fresh farm eggs. Other items include buffalo, whole hog sausage, hamburger and duck.

“Look forward to delectable Valentine treats including Valentine S’mores for the kids and heart-shaped pastries,” a press release stated. “Candies, cookies, jellies and jams available at the market will include low-sugar and no-sugar varieties.”

The market also will include whole wheat, white and artisan breads; chocolate and peanut butter fudge, and heart-shaped plates of cinnamon rolls and apple and cherry tea rings.

Non-edible gifts include potted spider plants and aloe vera, original artwork and luxury hand-knitted items.

“Lyon County families, bring your kids and ask about our market money giveaway,” Tracy Simmons, market manager. “$5 in market bucks — to be spent on food items online — will be given to the first 20 families who ask about this special promotion by the Flint Hills Community Health Center.”

Saturday’s market also will feature music by Savanna Chestnut from 10 to 11 a.m. and Anton Zouplna from 11 a.m. to noon. Homemade soup will be available for $3 a bowl.

A clarification: The market bucks are to be spent _at the market_. There is no way to buy farmers market food online at this time.
