City will plow, downtown cars need to move
From the City of Emporia
Tuesday, February 8, 2011
Due to the anticipated amount of snow, City snow plowing crews will be working tonight to remove snow from the downtown area.
The city asks that all cars parked on city streets be removed by midnight in order to allow the crews to complete the snow removal before businesses open tomorrow.
City parking lots are not included in this request. Parking is normally allowed until 2 a.m., but the snow removal crews will need additional time to remove the expected volume of snow.
The city would like to remind residents and snow removal companies that it is a violation of city ordinance to shovel or dump snow on City streets. Excess snow placed on city streets creates hazards for drivers, pedestrian and city snow plowing crews.
Be thoughtful of your neighbors and the emergency crews that are working to keep the streets clear of snow and ice.
Questions about the city code or parking regulations can be directed to the city manager’s office at 343-4250.

I don't know how many people I've seen shoveling their sidewalks, driveways, etc. into the street. Then I wonder if any of them get on here and complain about the city not removing the snow from their streets.
Also, I would like to say good job to all city employees who worked are on removing snow this last go around. I think the snow removal was excellent.
Maybe chris could run an article on what it costed extra to do that kind of cleaning job, how many people helped etc.
thanks again city employees for a job well done in my eyes.

Okay, so WHERE are you supposed to put all this snow from the sidewalks in downtown Emporia? I don't quite understand. I'm supposed to keep the sidewalks clear but you can't put it in the street. I'm of course not referring to sidewalks with yards next to them. That is the obvious solution. I'm talking about this situation... business, sidewalk, then street. Where do you put the snow?

Oh, and I too think the city is doing a fine job and trying to keep up with this snow. I don't envy the amount of work they have in front of them.

castaway, Might I suggest you take all the snow and build a big monument. You can carve Emporia on it. Perhaps it will bring additional customers and/or tourists into town. ; )

I like it, Goosey! I bet there's enough snow to build 4 or 5 of them!

Snowfall such as this doesn't happen all that often. This last week has been weird, must be global warming.
If nothing else the downtown businesses can do two or three swipes on the sidewalk and pile the stuff up next to their building. A single pathway out to each of the street parking spots and good to go.
Everyone else just shovel it where you can and relax. chances are the police are too busy to mess with tickets.

Where you being sarcastic about global warming? I really think it is because of global warming. The ice caps are melting making the ocean's tempatures lower and the water levels rise, causing some pretty intense weather patterns...but...these are just theories.
We have been coming out of an ice age for over 10,000 years now.

Cops are probably too busy helping the morons who keep getting stuck in the snow drifts because they want to make sure they have all the movies they need from the movie place. One idiot took out the traffic signal pole at 12th and Commercial a little while ago. Another was a local tow truck who was enjoying doing 360's in the middle of 18th this morning. Apparently their IQ matches the windchill today. You can't drive like it's July when there is snow all over the place. SLOW DOWN!!!

PLEASE DISREGARD MY EARLIER POST.
Just heard on the scanner some homeowner on Washington street called in reporting his neighbor had shoveled his driveway into the street, creating a "traffic hazard".

I think the city did a great job last snow and even plowed my street. I hope they do the same thing this time because it is getting mighty deep out there. We'll see in the morning.

I agree, the city did a great job on snow removal last week. They even plowed some side streets and streets leading to the hospital. I'm impressed.

I appreciate them clearing the streets, but it would be nice to not have the excess slow plowed into the end of my driveway making it near impossible to back out in my truck!

Please remember your pets, people?
It's kind of funny to watch a 8" tall dog try to poop in 14" of snow. (probably not for them).
A small path and "spot" shoveled for them would be nice.

Poor little guy.
Thomas Justagato is holding me responsible for his not being able to go outside. He just sits at the door whining.
Finally, out of sheer irritation yesterday, I opened the back door and let him see all the snow. He gave me a dirty look and shot off into the house never to be seen for hours. I see however, that he has given up and used his litter box.
