Street for Stinnett?

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

Last week we published a story on Gary Stinnett having another successful year driving a dragster on the NHRA circuit.

This year Stinnett won his fourth NHRA Lucas Oil Super Comp world championship and this was the second year in a row to win this honor.

Winning two World Championships is unbelievable and the odds are amazing. But the fact is this was his fourth Super Comp World Championship win and that is more than any other driver in the history of Super Comp racing. Stinnett has won the world championship in 1998, 2005, 2010 and 2011.

Stinnett’s story is incredible. He crisscrosses the country doing everything himself. Driving the hauler, cleaning the car, servicing the car and driving the dragster. The hours are exhausting and the costs to both family and finances are great. Yet, year after year he is driven to perfection which puts him in the winner’s circle.

This winning has helped him grow a business in Emporia which builds engines and carburetors that are sent all over the world for the drag racing industry.

Stinnett may not be a household name like Clint Bowyer but his contribution to motor sports history and Emporia should not be over looked.

There have been some quiet rumblings since Emporia has Clint Bowyer Boulvard if Lantern Lane, where Gary’s business resides, should be renamed after Gary Stinnett.

Surly no one could consider Mr. Stinnett's 4 world championships any less notable than Clint's incredible rise.
Even though Clint is a personal friend I am sure he would not be upset with me or anyone else that would suggest a street be named in Gary's honor for such feats he has accomplished.
I am sure knowing Clint's integrity, he would be the first one on board to promote it.
After all what does it take but a
aggreament of the city's fathers.

He deserves it no less, maybe more, than Clint did. I don't even know Mr. Stinnett, just being logical here.

Gary is most worthy of the honor although knowing his personality, he could probably care less about it.
