Some area agencies lose tax-exempt status

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

The Internal Revenue Service has revoked tax-exempt status for some area non-profit or charitable organizations.

According to IRS requirements, such groups must file annual information returns, most often in the form of a postcard, according to an IRS spokesman. Organizations that fail to file for three consecutive years automatically lose their tax-exempt status.

Some of the organizations simply have been disbanded and did not notify the IRS of their deactivated status; some may have changed mailing addresses or membership responsibilities that resulted in IRS filings’ being lost in the shuffle.

Others may be in the process of reinstatement and have not yet been removed from the revocation list.

Still, loss of tax-exempt status can affect both the donor and the recipient, according to the IRS.

“Your organization is liable for all income, excise or other taxes and penalties that may have been owed at the time it was automatically revoked,” an IRS document warns, adding that the organization also may be liable for future taxes that accrue because of the loss of exemption.

Organizations may apply for reinstatement to exempt status.

Donations to revoked charities may not be tax-deductible.

Citizens may check the tax-exempt status of any charity, church, or non-profit group in the nation at www.irs.gov/app/pub-78/forwardToSearch.do. An exact name of the group is needed for a complete search.

Non-profits and charities holding tax-exempt status also can furnish copies of current paperwork to validate the status to donors.

The Auto-Revocation List published on the IRS website, www.irs.gov, includes these area organizations and, when available, their last known addresses:

Nice to see the Feds had time to pass a law attacking non-profits in between all the Wall Street bail-outs.

Come on now owenrhys,

The feds didn't pass any new law attacking np's

This has been existing tax code for years.

Sorry bud, but if these non-profits, (some of them ran by high paid employees, some are not), can't do a little paperwork every year, they don't deserve the tax free status.
I have to file my tax returns every year, don't you?

I agree with Steve.

This action has been long overdue. The feds are finally cleaning house which they should have done many, many years ago.

My question: Why is Hopkins Manufacturing a non profit?

create,

hopkins????????? Must be the part that donates to teachers every year.

ON the other hand------------------
now a days it seems that a lot of businesses are not for profit. At least mine feels that way at times.

High paid employees?
You thinking of the American Legion Auxiliary or the Elmdale Cemetery?

It's B.S. - a waste of both the paper and the work.

Seems like they might want to leave the folks alone and fry some of the big fish.

OWENRHYS,

Excuse me, I said "some".

And i don't care if there are no paid employees, these nfp's
don't pay property taxes or sales taxes either.

So for every one that there is, means higher taxes for the rest of us.

The reporting required is about a post card worth of information. The tax exempt status is not revoked until 3 years of non- reporting.

Jesus man, what part of this don't you understand?

Many not for profits depend on tax exempt donations from the big dogs of business. These people would not donate millions of dollars unless it helped their bottom line. It might not be right but it is the way it is.

If these not for profits cannot file a little paper work once a year, they don't deserve the status.

If you look at the list, most have ceased to exist anyway.

3------THREE years of non- compliance.

Let's get real here bud. They screwed up !

don't take my word for it.

Ask someone who does not for profit fund raising what would happen if the tax exemption for donations was eliminated.

Steve_Corbin (anonymous) says...

owenrhys,

do you realize that the RDA is a not for profit?

Out of the $300k + of tax money used to run it over $180k is for salaries.

The united way is a not for profit. Their salaries are surely over $80k a year for their operations here.

Don't you think that should be public knowledge?

I think they should eliminate/suspend all tax exempt status until our debt is paid down.

Fraternities and sororities- are you serious?
