Annual Seasonal Celebration returns to White Auditorium

Friday, December 2, 2011

The Emporia Public Schools will present the 76th annual Seasonal Celebration Dec.14 and 15 in W.L. White Auditorium. The program will feature vocal and instrumental holiday music from around the world performed by students in grades six through 12.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. both nights and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission will be $3 at the door for school-age children and adults. Preschool children will be admitted free. No tickets will be required.

A dress rehearsal at noon Dec. 13 at the auditorium will be open to the public at no charge.

Sign language interpreters will be at the program both nights, and a section will be reserved for the hearing impaired. Flash photography will not be permitted in the auditorium for the evening performances but is welcome during the dress rehearsal.

For more information about the program, call Mary Herbert Education Center at 341-2200.

The "season" being celebrated is CHRISTMAS! If we have to be so politically correct that we cannot call a Christmas celebration a Christmas celebration, I have a few more suggestions:
News Years Day = The next holiday after the "Seasonal Celebration" Day.
Martin Luther King Day = Civil Disobedience Day (We can't use Dr King's name because after all he was a Minister and a Christian and often referred to God!)
President's Day = World Leaders Day (We don't want to offend ANY other country or their leaders.)
Easter = Rabbit Egg Hunting Day (Can't use Easter as that refers to the Christian Faith).
Independence Day = Founders Day or Founding Day (we don't want to offend the British by reminding them that we won the war.)
Labor Day = Fall Holiday (don't want to offend those who can't or don't work)
Thanksgiving = Turkey Thursday (this would remove any reference to giving God thanks for all that we have).

P.S. The Constitution provides for the Freedom OF Religion NOT the Freedom FROM Religion as it has been misinterpreted lately.

everytime some yokel goes on a soap box and screams bloody murder about the "celebration" not having christmas in it you just feed the flames. what the hell does it matter what its called as long as it happens? This is a bunch of kids performing for YOU, not a sunday sermon. Either go and enjoy the show or knock off with the name debate. you notice the name keeps changing but the DATE never does? take comfort in that and let the name debate fade away quietly.

They are advertising the event as the 76th annual Seasonal Celebration. This is false advertising. It was the Christmas program for most of that time. Although I cannot remember when it was renamed, the program cannot be more than 10 or 15 years as the Seasonal Celebration. Let's revert back and rename it as it is/was supposed to be Christmas Program!!!

(to the tune of Gene Autry)

"Here comes Establishment Clause,
Here comes Establishment Clause,
Right down Constitution Lane...

Engel vs. Vitale & the ACLU
pulling on the reins!

Bells are ringin', children singin',
All is merry and bright....

If you protect your freedom and say your prayers,
in the CHURCH of your choice tonight!!"

Why do people really care? Shakespere once said, "What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.." You know what it is and what it represents. It's not like anyone is forcing you in your home to say happy holidays right? Just enjoy the time, hear some great music, and show kids its not all scrooge and humbugs!

sail,
I like your thinking. I wish I had a radio station, I'd play that record you speak of. I too own a copy since my kids were in the orchestra back then. Yes indeedy, I sure would play that entire album on the air. Everyday.

At the time, I remember driving to Wichita in order to rent an A-flat clarinet since they didn't have one around here. My daughter could transpose the music and play it on her B-flat clarinet, but I thought she'd appreciate the A-flat clarinet and she was so pleased. She still talks about it.

What a great time for my children, for everyone's children.

Merry Christmas!!!

We don't need someone else to tell us what this is, or what it should be called, Let's just enjoy the music and the season.

KVOE, What would you charge to play the old recording in full? Let's all get in the spirit.

If all the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders along with the HS choir and band students weren't basically forced to participate, (it's part of their grade and boosts attendance), I don't think anyone would really have a problem with calling it a Christmas Program, but the fact of the matter is that this is a school function, and the separation of church and state is in the Constitution for a good reason.

Parents would be outraged if their kids were forced to participate in a "Eid Al-Fitr Program" where kids sing Islamic songs. Our schools are made up of kids from many different religions, or lack of religion, and none of them should have to be subjected to religious programs.

Maybe everyone could get together this year and record the Seasonal Celebration on their ipads and smartphones.
