Will Emporia make it into the Guinness Book of World Records? With your participation, it will.
It is exciting to see that Emporia State University students are organizing an event to break the Zumba world record and they are asking for the community’s help to do it.
The record stands at 1,223 people and event organizer Whitney Runer is hoping for 1,500 participants. With good community support we should be able to shatter this record easily.
The event will take place Thursday at Welch Stadium and will only last one hour. The stadium will open up at 6:15 p.m. with Zumba to begin at 7 p.m.
The exercise will be non-strenuous and geared toward beginners, so everyone of all ages and all fitness levels can take part.
Having Emporia make it into the Guinness record book will be something we can be proud of.
This is not Emporia’s first attempt at record-breaking. The 1982 tennis team of Emporians Ted Hollembeak, George Milton, and Jan Jefferis and Wichitan and former tennis standout at ESU Les Stafford made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest doubles tennis match. They played tennis for 91 hours and 42 minutes – nearly four days straight. The event raised money for tennis scholarships that still serve ESU students today.
The team played day and night and it was exciting to watch the community come out and fill stands at all hours to support their efforts.
Unlike the doubles tennis world-record breaking, the Zumba world record will be rather pain-free since it only lasts an hour.
Why not come out and take part in helping set a new standard in the Guinness Book of World Records? How exciting would it be to tell friends that you helped set the world record?
For more information, call Runer at 341-5944. We will see you at 7 p.m. Thursday at Welch Stadium.

Sounds like a lot of work. When we go for the record of "most people eating ribs at the same time", give me a call.

Exactly how will winning a " Zumba " world record benefit the City of Emporia, Ks. and its citizens ?
Will it substantially lower the cost of living ?
Will it " Curb " the unnecessarily wasteful spending habits of our City leadership, will it create more jobs, will it make the median income higher, will it repair the Citys crumbling infrastructure, will it make all of the " money pit " funding and unnecessary subsidy funding vanish and will it lower the cost of living/taxes ?
