Update:Victim of fatal overnight accident identified

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

The victim of a fatal overnight accident has been identified as 18-year-old Ernesto Arturio Ascencio of Emporia.

The accident occurred just after midnight Wednesday in1300 block of Road 160.

According to a press release from the Lyon County Sheriff, a sheriff’s deputy observed two cars that appeared to be drag racing in the 1000 block of East Logan Avenue just after midnight. The cars were traveling 85 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.

The deputy followed the two cars — a 1994 Honda driven by Dylan R. Mangas, 18, and the other a 2005 Toyota driven by Ascencio — as they left the city limits. In the 1300 block of Road 160 the deputy found two vehicles in the north ditch. Mangas, who was not injured, was taken into custody for reckless driving and other offenses. The Toyota appeared to have rolled over and come to rest upright. There were no occupants in the Toyota. Deputies were unable to locate the Toyota’s driver or other possible passengers.

About half an hour later the Lyon County Dispatch Center was notified by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad that an eastbound train reported hitting a pedestrian east of Road N in the area of Road 165. Sheriff’s deputies and officers of the Emporia Police Department found Ascensio between two sets of railroad tracks. According to the report, the officers identified him as the driver of the Toyota.

Details of the accident are being reviewed by Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman.

Logan Avenue Raceway Park with the starting line at Commercial Street.

Fortunately very few of the too frequent races have such a tragic ending.

When did they leave OVERLANDER RD. RACEWAY ? How about big ass speed bumps on Logan ave. maybe that will slow them down. OR maybe post the speed limit signs in Spanish ??

Why have signs in Spanish?? The white guy didn't slow down either? Speed bumps would be a lot better.

There are places to show off you supposed driving ability and fastest car !

Public streets and roads are not those places .

If as an 18 year old you crave thrills and excitement, I suggest you enlist in the military . There you will get all the thrills and excitement you can handle and may just learn something in the process.

It is tragic that such a young person had to pay the ultimate price for his actions .

However one must remember the rule of physics and life, " for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction " and " usually the actions you choose in life, almost always have consequences and will usually cost a price of some kind.

It was too bad a young life was lost ! I honestly thought maybe the lost child didn't understand the law. Driving that fast is automatic JAIL.!! Emporia HAD 2 race tracks in the past, But now we only have Heartland Park. If the other BOY was white and arrested II hope they throw the book at him. This is not a color thing, it was a STUPID THING..

I can remember the Drag Strip, that was approx. 11/2 miles straight East of the Airport. There was many a local " grudge " race held there .

It doesn't matter what race they are...why do so many Emporians point out what race a person is? We are ALL God's children...(like it or not) so we are all brothers and sisters in His eyes!
This is sad to have happened, but yes, Logan Ave and many other streets in this town are becoming race tracks. I say, put in speed bumps, nothing else seems to work. I live on market and from South ave to the rail road tracks, we also have to put up with people driving 50+ mph. It's not going to get better until the city cracks down harder or installs speed bumps in problem areas.

My heart and prayers go out to the young man's family.
