Hetlinger Developmental Services held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning for its $2 million expansion project.
The addition to the building built in 1966 will give Hetlinger room to serve 25 percent more clients. Hetlinger currently serves 85. The construction will take about a year.
“To the west will be a big expansion and that will be our new workshop,” said Trudy Hutchinson. “The area that’s the workshop now will be renovated into offices and other work-type areas.”
The parking lot and main entrance will also be moved to face Commercial Street.
The renovations will give more room for the screen printing and aluminum can recycling sections and adds a loading dock.
“That will allow us to get some contracts we don’t get now because we don’t have the capacity to load and unload,” said Hutchinson.
Because of inflation, Hetlinger still has to raise $200,000. Several organizations have donated to Hetlinger including the Mabee Foundation ($400,000), Jones Trust ($350,000), Trusler Foundation ($200,000), Loretto Langley Charitable Trust ($60,000), Reeble Foundation ($50,000), Lewis Humphreys Trust ($50,000), Capitol Federal Foundation ($50,000) and the Emporia Presbyterian Church ($25,000).
“We are very pleased and grateful to all of our donors who generously helped us meet the challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation,” said Hutchinson.

Good news for those in the construction trades and those who are support personnel.
Thanks to all those who have contributed funds.
