AAAs' season ends at regionals

Friday, August 5, 2011

The Emporia AAA Legion baseball squad’s season came to an end Thursday with a 16-2 loss to the Texarkana Razorbacks at regionals in Minden, La. The AAAs finished with an 0-2 record at the regional tournament and an overall record of 43-12 for the season.

Texarkana didn’t score the bulk of its runs early. It took a 3-0 lead before Adam Matz came up with RBI singles in back-to-back innings to cut Emporia’s deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning. That’s when Texarkana kicked its bats into high gear. The Razorbacks scored three in the fourth inning, three in the fifth and seven in the sixth to close out the big win.

Emporia wasn’t able to come up with any more runs to respond to Texarkana’s big inning.

“Their pitcher was pretty good,” Emporia coach Steve Schlup said.

Brett Lechien got the start on the mound for Emporia. Casey Atchison and Matz came on to pitch in relief. Schlup said he was pleased with his team’s overall record despite the tough loss to end the season.

“We represented Emporia and Kansas very well,” he said.

The 43-12 overall record ranks among the best in team history. The AAAs’ 2001 state championship team finished with more wins but a lower winning percentage at 44-15.
