Jason E. Byrd has been charged with seven different crimes after allegedly fighting and trying to choke a Lyon County Sheriff’s deputy Sunday morning outside the Nowhere Bar in Americus.
Byrd, 31, was taken to the Lyon County Jail. He was charged Tuesday with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal threat, domestic battery, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor criminal damage. He will have a preliminary hearing at 3 p.m. May 9 in front of District Court Judge Douglas Jones.
Sheriff’s deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper were called to the bar, 608 Main St., at about 1:16 a.m. Sunday.
According to court documents, Byrd was pestering people at the bar, trying to pick fights and asking them “are you down with humanity because the aliens are coming”.
At one point Byrd allegedly pushed or threw his wife to the ground. Several people jumped on Byrd at the time, a court affidavit states.
Upon arriving, deputies escorted Byrd from the bar and attempted to speak with him about the fight. Byrd grabbed a deputy. Another deputy and a trooper were able to wrestle him to the ground, according to court documents.
Byrd attempted to strangle one deputy, a court document states. He grabbed the radio lapel mic and managed to disable the earpiece.
A deputy tased Byrd on the left torso. He continued to try to go after the officers so he was tased twice more on the left shoulder.
“I’m done, I’m done,” is what Byrd said after the third tasing, the affidavit states.
