To plan the future of parks in Emporia, current and future city leaders are thinking about paying $17,000 for a master park plan.
A consultant laid out what could be involved in the study at Wednesday’s work session for three current commissioners and three incoming ones. No decisions were made Wednesday but the item likely will come up for a vote in the near future.
The city does not have a master plan for parks. Mark McAnarney, assistant city manager, said the object of the study is to have a formal process to help the city evaluate how to make future park improvements.
“In the four years I’ve been on the commission, we’ve talked about how many parks does Emporia need, how much expenses should we put into the parks and how much do the parks actually gets used,” said Commissioner Kevin Nelson. “Should we have three major parks and put all the money into that or have 10 green spaces that we don’t do a lot with but have play spaces? We don’t have a lot of those answers.”
If approved the study would be performed by Patti Banks Associates, a Kansas City recreation consulting firm that has done work previously in Emporia.

Wow. A consultant? Really? We're still paying consultants for surveys? I thought that was a major discussion point in the election we just held.

How about a $5,000 feasibility study to determine if we need to spend $17,000 for a Master Park Plan!!!!
Why not utilize the Votech or College Students to come up with a Master Plan. It would be a very good project and they would probably jump at the opportunity!

I sure hope the vote on this "study" is postponed until the new commissioners are in charge.
Then we can find out about campaign offerings vs. real life actions.

How in the world, are the people of Emporia supposed to get to these beautiful new " expensive " parks if the streets and access roads are not fit for travel ?
Has any of the current Commissioners, future Commissioners taken a real good look at Emporias streets, " lately ", they are a joke, except for a short section of 6th ave, 12 th ave , South ave and Login ave ! But we do or will have some needless entrance Rocks and we will all be paying a fee for rain water run off, in the future !
What do I think of how our tax dollars are spent ?
You really don' t want me to say what I truely think about how our tax dollars are " squandered " do you ?
Besides, I would think, that by now, you all would be well aware of what I think about the City Commission and how their puppet masters are running things !

O.K., sail, I posted a comment or two and I can say for sure, that , it will not make one rats a$$ bit of difference in how things are going to be done in the " Kingdom of Elitopia " ! As there are only those few who believe that they have credibility, due to a name, who's words or comments carry any weight or wisdom at all and that their wants, wishes and desires overrule the needs of all Emporias, citizens ! And the simple fact of the matter is, that these few elite dictators have managed to stack the upcomming City Commissin in their favor, " AGAIN " !
