AMERICUS — A parade, softball tournament and Twinkie-eating contest are just three of the assorted activities awaiting Americus Day attendees Saturday.
The annual community celebration packs a full slate of events, games, food and music. It kicks off around 6:30 a.m. with breakfast and wraps up from 5 to 7 p.m. with a free hot dog feed and karaoke.
The majority of the events are at or near City Park in Americus. Here are some of the highlights:
• A breakfast buffet with pancakes and biscuits and gravy will be served from 6:30 to 11 a.m. at Americus Elementary School.
• A bike ride starts at 7 a.m. at the park.
• A softball tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. at the city ball field, while 3-on-3 basketball heats up at the north tennis court.
• A run-walk that promises to be fun will commence at 8:30 a.m. at the park.
• 9 a.m. means the start of the Flatland Cruiser car show, plus vendors are open and historical pictures by Lloyd Brown at the library.
• The parade rolls at 11 a.m. on Main Street
• A rare chance to watch Americus citizens stuff multiple Twinkies in their mouth will take place at 12:45 p.m. at the park.
• Pie, chili, bingo or pool? Those are the 2 p.m. options. A pool tournament will be held at the New Breck and Nowhere Bar while pie and chili cookoffs will be ongoing on the tennis court. Registration forms are available at the New Breck. Bingo is in the senior center building.
• The Mike Miller Band will perform from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the park. A final raffle drawing and grand prizes will be awarded at the conclusion.
