Flintknapping among activities offered at preserve

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

The Tallgrass National Prairie Preserve will focus on the history of the Flint Hills Saturday during a series of special events.

Saturday will focus on three components of the history of the Flint Hills: American Indian, bison and flint-knapping.

The schedule is as follows and will be located in and around the limestone barn at the preserve:

• At 10:30 a.m., Jerry Shaw, instructor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at Wichita State University, will present a program on the history of the Osage Nation. He will use authentic clothing of beaded leggings, vests, blankets and shawls dating from 1870 to 1913.

• At 12:30 p.m., a talk on the American bison will be presented with a full bison robe and skull on display.

• From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. flint-knapping will be demonstrated by Dan Rowlinson.

• 90-minute bus tours will take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. During the prairie bus tour, park rangers will discuss the prairie’s system of plants and animals, geology that formed the Flint Hills, American Indians and the legacy of ranching. The prairie tour is available daily at 11 a.m. with more as staffing allows. Advance reservations are recommended.

I think it would be really cool if they would allow Flint Napping. Put out a blanket and take a snooze in the Flint Hills.
