ESU players ticketed for marijuana use in dorm
Monday, September 20, 2010
A trio of Emporia State football players have been cited for marijuana possession at an ESU dorm late last month.
Miguel Enrique Johns, Jackson Paul Bonnette and Orelando Andrel Pratt Jr. allegedly had marijuana in North Twin Towers in the early morning hours of Aug. 28, two days after the Hornets won their season-opening football game.
All three have been issued misdemeanor tickets. The trio will have a first appearance in Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Oct. 28.
ESU football coach Garin Higgins said the players are no longer with the team. The players were redshirting this season so they hadn’t seen any game action before being removed from the squad
The Emporia Police referred questions about the case to ESU. Emporia State police and media relations officials, however, said they could not comment on the specifics of the incidents, how the students obtained marijuana or whether the students face disciplinary action.
All buildings on the Emporia State campus are smoke-free. The residence hall contract states the possession of illegal drugs on university property is a violation of university policy and therefore prohibited.
Bonnette was a freshman quarterback from Corpus Christi, Texas. He was one of five quarterbacks on the Hornets roster.
Bonnette and Pratt, a freshman wide receiver, attended the same high school in Corpus Christi. Johns was a freshman wide receiver from Newton.

ah, its ok, they are just children, and probably had a bad childhood, and were never taught that marijuana was a bad thing to do while being on a COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM, but as most of the super jocks they think they are, knew that they were able to smoke in the dorms because they were on the allmighty college football team ... once again JMO,,
oooooh the poor children
I am glad the college security caught them, because the city police would of let them go, and not a word of it would of been mentioned

All I can do is shake my head. I think of all the hopeful high school kids who would give anything to be on a college team, who play their hearts out for the chance.
What a bunch of yahoos. kuSportsPa is right. Good luck at JUCO if that.
Idiots. I wonder if these guys had full rides?

Justa that reminds me of a few years back and some of BB players were hired by a business here in town and a supervisor caught them doing weed on the roof. He went and told the plant manager and PM told him he didnt see anything. Had it been one of us we would have been fired and jail time

I would have to agree on the fact that no one does know their pasts or overall intentions on using, or at least having possession of the marijuana. I would hope that Emporia State University handles this "violation of university policy" appropriately. It is also nice to see that none of this went unnoticed. Although I do not believe marijuana should be illegal, I do believe that is should be regulated, have an age restriction, and should never be used on public property, let alone schools.
I hope the 3 young boys have learned something...

These boys should be ashamed of themselves. Three college boys alone together in a bedroom on a Saturday and no college girls? Serves them right!

I presume the high-toned people moralizing on here have never done anything they shouldn't have done......not even in the days of their youth. You must be so proud of your self's....or so hypocritical?

Hmmmm, thought illegal was illegal no matter what. Guess it depends on what is illegal whether it is ok or not. Yes, I have done some things I shouldn't have done in my lifetime, and I also paid the price for them. And they were illegal. I got caught & paid for it. So should these boys. They knew it was wrong. But again, college football wanna-be heros. Go figure. Illegal is illegal no matter what it is.

They got caught....They lost their places on the squad....they are scheduled to appear in Municipal Court where it is assumed they will be punished in accordance with the law......They will presumably be punished in accordance with university policy if for nothing else than smoking in the dorms.
What more do some of you want....The Firing Squad?

I'm no hypocrite, biscuit, and I'll thank you for not calling me one. I'm coming from the perspective of one who has witnessed for years how hard some of these high school kids work when they play ball. They play hard for the team, yes, but they also have hopes for college ball in mind as well.
Many don't get picked no matter how hard they work, true, but what about those who missed the mark by very little? These three dopers edged them out. And this is how they behave? Screw them!

Were their lives actually ruined? Or would allowing three freshmen athletes to continue to do illegal drugs in campus housing have more of a negative effect?

You have to be smart to go to college, so we can assume these dudes are smart. Smart people know stuff like baking your bean with Mary Jane is illegal. So we know these dudes knew what they were doing would have consequences ifn' they got caught. If their lives are ruined it's cuz they ruined them.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't recall hearing anybody suggest they shouldn't have been punished for their actions. I just think the punishment they have received (getting kicked off the team)....and the punishment they have yet to receive (municipal court and school punishment) adequately covers the severity of the crime.
Come on people....the last I heard smoking a little pot wasn't a capital offense.

Quick everyone, grab your hoes and pitch forks, torches too! Let's round up these "dopers" and hang em!
Some people on here need to take it easy. These kids are being punished and it didn't say anything about them stealing anyones birthday so I think some people are overreacting.
I'd love to see the gazette start posting individual traffic tickets and other minor offenses on here and see how many people got on and started demonizing the drivers. Now that would be funny. "They could have killed somebody!"
Chill out.
