Who do you think should fill Jim Barnett's vacated senate seat?
- Jerry Karr (D)
- Jeff Longbine (R)
- Undecided
961 total votes.
To replace Republican Jim Barnett in the state senate, area Democrats have chosen a familiar face, who had been elected to the Kansas Legislature five times.
Jerry Karr will be the Democratic candidate in the 17th District. He will face Emporia City Commissioner Jeff Longbine in the Nov. 2 election to fill the remaining two years of Barnett’s term.
Karr, a north Lyon County resident, served in the senate from 1981 to 1998 before resigning because of problems with his hog farm business and his wife’s health condition. Harry Stephens filled out the remainder of Karr’s term but was defeated by Barnett in 2000.
Barnett has held the seat since 2000. He will resign from his post Oct. 1 to work full-time as a doctor at the Cotton-O’Neil Clinic in Topeka.
Karr was the only Democrat nominated at the party’s 17th District convention this afternoon at the Granada Theater in Emporia.
“I hope I live up to your expectations” he told precinct members. "We will make a major effort to make this a very competitive race.”

Definitely Karr, and I agree with 3rdperson. Longbine's only chance is if people vote their party without picking the best man.

Two VERY qualified candidates.
This will be a tough choice.
Whoever wins they will hopefully be a little more moderate than the man they are replacing.
This one could be interesting.

Once again, same ole-same ole political candidates.
One would concentrate his time on agriculture issues.
The other would be looking out for the best interests of the automobile industry and the other Multi million $$$$ businesses in the state.

Looking forward to a reasoned and balanced analysis of the positions and ideas of both candidates on various issues facing the state government, so that we might make a better-informed decision before voting. We'll get that sort of thing, won't we?
Please?
