County, hospital and health center look at collaboration

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Three entities came together Wednesday afternoon to discuss collaboration between the hospital and the community health center.

Representatives from the Lyon County Commission, Newman Regional Health and the Flint Hills Community Health Center/Lyon County Health Department met in a joint meeting at the Lyon County Annex Wednesday afternoon. Discussion centered around collaboration between the hospital and the health center.

“I hope today is the start of something,” said Newman Chief Executive Officer Bob Driewer. “At the end of the day our two organizations are about taking care of patients...”

Driewer said the hospital’s charity care line item is going up.

“At the end of the day we are going to have to change how we do business,” Driewer said.

Liz Conrade, chief executive officer of the health center, said self-pay accounts are going up at the health center, putting a strain on a grant the health center gets to help cover costs associated with uninsured and underinsured patients.

“We are at the point of loss financially because of the change in the payer mix,” Conrade said.

County employees should not be collaborating with private entities. They tend to forget whom they are working for when they collaborate. Same as Walters collaborating with drug companies and their grants. Who is she working for? It is not the tax payers!

The huge changes that are looming in medical care brought about by Obama's health care legislation are freezing new employment and expansion in the medical sector which accounts for 16% of GDP.

I think it has more to do with the rapid decline in population in Emporia, due to lack of jobs & the aging population of our community rather than Obama's plan.

lowereastside, that's a good point but did you hear what Hillary Clinton said Wednesday? She said,"the epected 1.3 Trillion U.S. deficit is a message of weakness internationally and it poses a nationally security threat. The economic health of the nation is what will bring us down and it's not all Obama's fault but we can't keep kicking the can down the street. But that's what there going to do. How do you like this? 100% write off on new plant and equipment. Maybe Emporia might be able to keep Fanestil after all.
