EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

- Ashley DeBauge, who won both singles and doubles events in the 12-and-under division of the USTA Futures Tennis Tournament in Iowa.
- The ESU football team, which won its season opener.
- The North Lyon County school district, which received a $100,000 donation from the Jones Trust to purchase new technology for classrooms.
- Emporia State Federal Credit Union, which donated $20,000 to the Flint Hills Technical College to help with the construction costs of the Jones Education Center.
- Hopkins Manufacturing, which placed first in the 2010 Corporate Challenge. The Mental Health Center’s Team Hyde placed second.

Also, Kelli Johnsen organized a yard sale that raised over $1000 for The Keith Worthington Chapter of the ALS Association. (This chapter serves Emporia and the region.) Hats off also to all that donated items and time in addition to those that shopped the sale.

I tip my hat to Chris Walker and Steve e wonder on there comments to the County Commission. The reason I call him Steve e wonder is--I wonder what he's going to do next? And I tip my hat to Steve Coburn for pointing out there clout--political power.

I tip my hat to all Emporians who believe that the best way to convince the City Commission that they are wrong on the budget is to let them have their way.

I tip my hat to all the positive and negative people in our town. We need both, one to invent the airplane and the other to invent the parachute. It's ok for our City Manager to be optimistic, he can always cry later.
