The Emporia High girls golf team finished ninth out of 12 teams at the Newton Invitational on Thursday night. The Spartans had a team score of 269 for the nine-hole event.
Sophomore Amber Mechtley shot a 50 and was the top finisher among Emporia golfers. She finished sixth overall. Mechtley had one bad hole, coach Rick Eckert said, but other than that managed to play a consistent round.
Eckert said he was impressed by Mechtley’s demeanor.
“It’s kind of hard to tell if she’s getting fired up inside or upset about something,” Eckert said. “Her exterior demeanor, it never changes during a round. She’ll show a little frustration once in a while. I’ll tell you what, when a shot’s over, if it’s a bad one, she’ll say ‘Aw, dang it.’ Then she lets it go.”
