Sen. Derek Schmidt has my vote for attorney general. But I’ve heard some mud slinging and I can tell you from being friends with Derek since first grade, he’s not who the media and his opponent are making him out to be! Derek has always had a sense of pride in our hometown of Independence and Kansas . He has always been focused on helping make Kansas a better place to live and work.
Since leaving Independence, I’ve run into him through various jobs/activities. I’d ask him what he’s up to and he’d simply say he’s just seeing what’s going on around Kansas. Derek not only visits with constituents, he actually listens to them. He genuinely cares about what is happening to Kansans and in our state.
Derek led the effort in the Senate to toughen penalties on con artists who prey on senior citizens or disabled Kansans. He wrote the Sheriff Matt Samuels Chemical Control Act, which sharply reduced meth production in Kansas . He wrote the Senate version of Jessica’s Law, which puts violent sex offenders who prey on children in prison, for life.
Derek’s list of accomplishments is long. He has served the people of southeast Kansas very well, just ask them! We may not always agree with our elected officials decisions, but I know Derek will take everything into account before making a decision.
If elected as attorney general, I’m confident he will do whatever humanly possible to move Kansas forward.
