ESU president a finalist for job in Illinois

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Emporia State University president Michael Lane is one of three finalists to be interviewed to fill a job as president of Millikin University in Illinois.

On Millikin's website the university said it has received and reviewed well over 80 applications to fill the position. The website also says first round interviews were conducted in late September and extended interviews with the three finalists will take place through early November.

Millikin University is an independent 4-year university in Decatur, Ill., a city of 76,000 people located 120 miles north of St. Louis, 180 miles south of Chicago, and 150 miles west of Indianapolis. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church

He knows how to harvest the students and recruit China and he has a tracking system to assure success. Back in my day we had to make friends with the smart people in class to make it through and kids today lose the art of inovation and it no wonder a lot of them are having a tough time finding a job. When I was a senior, I was making as much as the teacher selling Real Estate. I wonder how many kids can do that today with all the extra help they get?

reddog, step into a professors office and ask them how college has changed since they attended and they will tell you that it is a lot more recite and regurgitate than it was 20 years ago. Also, the job market sucks and with many more people competing for the same jobs there are some that are going to use their MBA asking "Would you like fries with that?" More people in college these days equals more educated people having to fill in for the lack of unskilled laborers who go straight to work from high school. It's not the help college students get that affects their money making ability and job marketability, it's the fact that the times are completely different than they were when college was a sure bet to a good job with a good salary and a solid place in at least the middle class. Besides, that does all that have to do with Lane being considered for a job anyway?

This is s surprising occurrence because Dr. Lane originally said that he wants to stay at ESU for a long time. If you're happy, why apply elsewhere? I guess you can change your mind and look for something better at any time. He has moved around a lot in his career. Many people are bothered by the emphasis he has placed on international student recruitment to bring in the high tuition dollars and the lack of support those students have when they are enrolled at ESU. They help the enrollment numbers, but what are they gaining and contributing as academic students? The current administration is all about number-crunching, but ESU has traditionally always been about the students... Maybe we'll get a chance to return to that philosophy.

reddog's comments rarely have much to do with the topic of the thread. He just goes off on what ever little tangent he feels like. You get used to it apierich.

They always say they want to stay a long time and be part of the family. Of course they are already sending out resumes when they walk in the door.

But what else could they say......." Hi.....I not going to bother to unpack because I wont be here long on my relentless climb to the top of the heap."

College presidents rarely stay for long--the job is too high profile and the good ones make too many waves to stay long term. That said, I won't cry if Millikin takes Mike Lane. The university has hardly prospered under his tenure, and in fact one could make the case that it has stagnated. I knew we wouldn't find another gem like Schallenkamp, but Lane's tenure has been a real disappointment.

OH, I know ESU has" flourished" under the tutelage of President Lane.When our "respected talent search committee "again looks for our next President,I do hope they again strive to find such a strong and dynamic leader who will represent ESU with pride in increasing our student population on campus. '" OHHH HAPPY DAY'"

Mike Lane hasn't been a miricle worker, but he did inherit one hell of a mess. Schellenkamp was good for awhile, but morale was bad, her scholarship program became challenged and "her boy" Boyce about wrecked the ESU Foundation. Lane has handled the budget mess like a pro. Most would have had a kitty, but Lane and accountant by traning just made the dollars work. He lacks personality and tends to be a know it all, but his task has been very difficult. With the future not even close to optimistic why wouldn't he leave if he can? And about the Asian kids - they are a God send in my opinion. They pay good money, do not create any problems in the city that I know about and are amoung the brightest in their classes. In addition they offer Kansas kids an opportunity to deal with a completely different culture. Looks like a win/win to me. If President Lane leaves it will give the University a chance to hire someone who might stimulate the campus or he/she might be a dud. Lets; hope all works out.

University leaders in Kansas see pay frozen for 2nd year

The leaders of Kansas' four-year universities won't be getting pay raises for the second year in a row.

The Board of Regents, which governs the six institutions, voted Thursday to freeze the salaries of the chancellor of the University of Kansas and the five university presidents.

The vote came one day after the regents agreed to ask that state lawmakers fund a five-part, $50.4 million "Kansas Commitment" initiative to boost the economy, repair neglected buildings, and help schools manage inflation.

The commitment also includes the creation of a middle- and low-income student grant/loan program for families living below the state's median income level — $50,174. Students who qualify for a grant would commit to graduating and working in the state. Students who don't meet those conditions would be expected to pay back the money.

"Public universities are supposed to be for those who have the talent, not just those rich enough to afford to pay for it," said board chairman Gary Sherrer of Overland Park.

A tight state budget was blamed for the salary freeze. "This has nothing at all to do with performance," said Regent Christine Downey-Schmidt of Inman. In fact, she said, regents are pleased with the leaders' work.

"They're not asking for any kind of raise this year," said Regent Dan Lykins of Topeka. "But I feel bad having to freeze them knowing what their peers are getting."

The compensation packages, including public and private contributions are:

* KU chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, $425,000;

* Kansas State president Kirk Schulz, $350,000;

* Wichita State president Don Beggs, $277,160;

* Fort Hays State president Ed Hammond, $223,860;

* Pittsburg State president Steven Scott, $213,200;

* Emporia State president Michael Lane, $213,200.

It's awfully hard to pay our local property taxes on a salary of only 213,200. a year.

Oh wait.

His house is furnished also. Never mind.

And guess what. it's hard to pay local property taxes on an income of only ten or twelve thousand dollars a year also.

Very good point, Steve. That's exactly the reason why Lane is leaving. It's always gonna be about money. Yup, over two hundred grand a year and a free house to boot.

And yes, biscuit, excellent point about something like this occurring after two years of no COLA raises for Social Security folks. Let's cry a big tear for Lane. BOO HOO!

Wow, some of you guys are priceless.

I cannot blame anyone for trying to advance themselves. They get the good paying career jobs by applying themselves. Most folks are where they are in life for good reason.

Good luck to you President Lane.

I'll give you that, neighbor. However, these people like Lane should not enter a local area's picture making all kinds of promises about wanting to stay and loving the place, etc. It's all BS because they are just using people and institutions as stepping stones. If you're in it for the glory and money, say so to begin with.

Lane is a horrible president. I am a current ESU student and not once has he had a good attitude with anyone. Many rumors I have heard about him from reliable friends with positions on campus disgust me. I have ran into him about four times and each time he has the same horrible personality. Very snobbish. We need and want a president who will interact with us. Someone who can bring more to the University and also the town. Please hope this man gets a new job. Be the only time I ever do that.
