Police find the mother of newborn left in Dumpster

Friday, October 22, 2010

Emporia police have located the mother of the baby boy that was found in an apartment complex dumpster Friday morning about 30 minutes after the baby was born.

Christina N. Devine, 24, was taken by police to Newman Medical Center for medical attention this evening. The boy, which weighs 7 pounds and 10 ounces, is in stable condition at Newman.

A tip to call an employee of an unidentified business led authorities to Devine, who admitted to police that she had given birth earlier Friday.

Chapel Ridge Apartment maintenance workers found the boy at about 8:24 a.m. Friday in a commercial dumpster on the south side of the apartment parking lot, The infant was in a plastic trash bag. Workers saw the bag moving.

Emporia police and Lyon County Sheriff deputies conducted a canvas of the apartment complex and searched nearby trash receptacles for clues. Police also received several phone tips.

The Emporia Police Department is continuing to investigate. Police have not disclosed Devine’s hometown or where she works. Police also have not said whether charges could be filed.
