No, it probably wasn't Churchill or even Shaw who said something like, "Madam, we have already established what you are, now we are simply haggling about the price".

But, re Fanestil, one might think that we have, and we are.

I would hope not, but do not think the city fathers care much about keeping another "PACKER" near the city of Emporia.

When the RDA raised the wages from 25,000 to 30,000 in a time of the worst economic downturn since the great depression--this told me everything.

Has anyone thought to ask the folks at Lebo what they think? Many aren't all that excited about it.

Fanestil is a company that could go big time!!!

Well I have talked to some Lebo people and they are excited about the fact they will be able to buy Fanestil products without coming to Emporia, and at a cheaper cost than the stores charge. Plus the added revenue to the city will help that depressed area.

It seems hard for me to understand why the powers that be in Emporia seem so willing to just let more jobs and revenue walk out the door.....Can we afford to be so uppitty?

After all we have some people fighting tooth and toenail to save four rusty old half tin cans on the fairgrounds. Personally, I would rather have the new Fanestil's plant......let the tin cans go to Lebo.

Perhaps Emporias' Leaders/Powers that Be, are counting on the New/Old trickle down economics of the New, Republican/Tea Party Colaition ... to somehow miraculously work miracles on a problem that was created by " ALL " in government over the years !

All I can say, if that is what they are looking forward to, is, " HAH " !

Hell, the Repubs can' t even make up their mind as to which way the should " Flip " or " Flop " on the " Earmark/Pork Barrel Spending Ban initiative and they haven' t even taken office or been sworn in yet !
No Sir, it' s going to be the same old operating proceedure it has been !

So what makes anyone think that the new Repub/Tea Party coalition can help " Fix " problems, that all the Politicians, Political Partys and the " Influential Wealthy Backers ", helped to create, " in the first place " !

Government, Politics, Poltical Partys and Politicians have become like a barrel full of rotting Flesh and Blow Flys.... Not much good for anything, except , Stench, a Buzzing Noise and Parasites !

Smoots wants the city to pay for new utilities out to Industrial Park IV. That will cost over 1 million dollars. How many people would be up in arms if they agree to that. Where is that money going to coming from?

joejoe2, Didn't you hear? They are trying to get folks that live in the area out there to pay for it. ya right......

We need some new people to work for the economic development of Emporia. The ones we have sit around and wait for companies to move here then take credit for it.
We are also wasting a special sale tax to bring new jobs to Emporia. Why not try to keep existing jobs?

biscuitboy (anonymous) says...

I'm not arguing your point joejoe2, but I wonder how many people wanting to build a plant in that Industrial Park are not going to expect the city to provide utilities? It would seem to me that utilities present on site would almost be a given. So if the cost is too much for the city to bear....maybe the city should have considered that before placing Industrial Park IV in that remote location.

just exactly where is Industrial Park IV? I'm not sure of the exact location.

Good luck to Lebo people who must now foot the bill for all the new sewers and water system to support this plant. That's a lot of sausage.

I see your point Biscuit. I just think the city is getting a raw deal on the Fanestil decision ( not previous decisions ) I think its a bad precident to set. From what I read in the Coffey County papers Smoots is not happy with the deal they are offering him either.

November 16, 2010 at 1:01 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

Buffalo_Breath (anonymous) says...

The news out today from Lebo indicates that Lebo isn't very happy about the deal at this point, either, mainly due to high cost of sewer improvements needed.

It also indicated that Smoots wouldn't cooperate with the City's engineers in determining what needed to be done. Is that some kind of p.y.a. thing by the engineer, or is the guy really lined up at the public trough and complaining about the free slop? If it's the latter, I'd tell him to pack his sausage and go.

Watching economic development happen might be worse than watching sausage being made.

"four rusty old half tin cans" -- LOL, BB!

Meth, what on earth does Fanestil's moving have to do with pork barrel spending? Seems like you're just looking for a place to rant for no good reason.

The city has offered incentives to businesses to come here but can't seem to work with an established business? One that has proven itself? What am I missing here?

The city made Smoots a decent offer and he just wants more. The more I find out the less I care whether Fanestils stays. I am about to the point of helping them pack.
