Possum holds residents hostage

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

To start your day off right we thought we'd include some items from today's police blotter.

Possum holds residents Hostage

Early this morning: scanner traffic indicated an animal problem in the city: a 'possum was standing outside a door and wasn't leaving. Police were called to help trapped residents.

Hunting for Trail Cameras

And on the sheriff's office log: According to a Lyon County Sheriff media log entry, a landowner in the 1700 block of Road U reported a person illegally hunting on their land. The landowner put a trail camera on the property to catch the hunter. The hunter then allegedly stole the trail camera.

Maybe the possum was out having a photo shoot when it noticed a thief running off with the camera. Perhaps the possum had tracked the perpetrator to that door and was holding the occupants for the police. It's too bad that Doctor Doolittle wasn't available to take the possums statement. I guess we will never know. :(

It's a sign of the times when people arent capable of dealing with a possum by themselves. How do they deal with real danger?

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

It was probably Pogo the Possum.... from the cartoon strip..... :-)

I think government intervention spending at least $1,000,000,000 of the taxpayer's money is called for here. Followed by lots of flowery speeches on how they saved the town & created jobs.

Or you could call a private citizen trapper who would probably take care of it for a 6-pack.

create (anonymous) says...

You're not far off on your third statement. For several years, I had to deal with squirrels chewing into the area between the two floors of my house. I tried two different pest control companies to no avail. Finally, I placed an ad in the paper. I immediately received a call from a "private citizen trapper" who took care of the problem for me in less than a week. 28 squirrels. What he did with them is of no interest to me. Main thing is he got rid of them plus their offspring. According to the biologist at K-State, squirrels keep the memory of where they were born and will always try to go back to that area when it gets cold.

Several years later, and some new wood on the penetrated areas, knock on wood, no squirrels. So see, you weren't far off.

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

Yes, it is, sickofitall, just as "Raccoon" is the correct spelling, not "Coon", as back in my hunting days we all referred to our "Coon Dogs", & "Coon Hunting", not "Raccoon Dogs". Even the creator of the comic strip called him "Pogo Possum".

But I think everyone knows what creature we're talking about, and that the spelling is not due to ignorance on anyone's part.... ;-)

Wonder if this was the same possum who visited my porch recently. When I opened the door it looked at me, but when I shooed it away and made loud noises, it left.
I know that I am partially responsible for it being on my porch. I'm a sucker who feeds the outside cats at my house. And possums love cat food. And knowing there has been a possum on my porch, I still can't stop feeding the cats.

sickofitall, if you look it up in the Merriam-Webster dictionary either spelling, opossum or possum, is now considered acceptable naming for the animal just as the word trough can be properly pronounced as trof or troth. I only use that as another example because of a disagreement that a supervisor and I had a few years ago about those words that we cleared up with the good old dictionary.

It really cracked me up though, and for anyone wanting to put shoes on a possum, they actually make shoes for tiny dogs that I am sure would fit a possum.

Yes, that is troubling. However, I can't help but remember that I also sunk extra money every month into a mutual fund thinking I would help to shore up my KPERS. Nearly every bit of it is gone, all the principal and interest, and I never touched it once. Can you blame me if I don't want to touch mutual funds again? Many pension funds across the country also lost to bad investments.

I keep hearing that the Kansas Fund is also in trouble, but the people in Topeka say no. KPERS may be in trouble in some sectors. I only ask about the teachers end of it which I understood was solvent.

I hear so many people (myself included) talk of making less money now than they did two, three, four, even five years ago. And the decrease did not all just happen, but has been a steady decline over the years.

And yet many of these same people want to continue to rely on the same cures for our ills that has been in place throughout this period. I am reminded of what a friend of mine used to tell me about my choice in women. He said.....Preston, you make the same mistake over and over again....then keep expecting different results.

I think his advice applies here also.

During this decline, in the last, say, 5 years, we've had a Repub Pres for 3 and a Dem Pres for 2. We've had a Dem-controlled congress for 4 of those 5. I'm not sure which mistakes to complain the loudest about ;-)

November 13, 2010 at 12:47 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

biscuitboy (anonymous) says...

The mistakes I am specifically referring to are the continued reliance on further extending tax cuts to the very rich to promote job growth without any demands that those cuts promote job growth......supported by Dems and Repubs alike. Continued demands to slash spending on programs that don't benefit us while fighting tooth and toenail to defend the ones that do.....,supported by both sides of the aisle. And continuing to ignore the real root causes of our problems that the world is a 21st Century place that we keep trying to apply 20th Century solutions to.....ignored by everybody.

November 13, 2010 at 1:18 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

REWBA (anonymous) says...

No open_eyes, You have to look at when the decline began. It was the back when Jeb Bush told the world that his brother won the vote in his state. Immediately, the market began to tank. When Gore demanded a recount, the market paused and began to recover but when the courts appointed Bush at PotUS, the market fell out from under the world and global war broke out across the universe. It all happened under a Republican controlled House and Senate with a republican sitting in the oval office and a republican appointed supreme court to make it all legal. The last time our government was in this much debt was after a twelve year republican reign. It only took eight years with bush jr because he had his daddy to advise him.

OK, You all gave Obama a friendly congress for two years, just like you gave Clinton. The repubs haven't even taken their oath of office yet and they are already talking about making the bush tax cuts on the wealthy permanent and kicking poor children out of the emergency room cause they can't pay.

What do you want to bet that they do nothing about cheap illegal labor?

November 13, 2010 at 1:19 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

biscuitboy (anonymous) says...

But the decline didn't just start five years ago....in fact the decline was one of the reasons the Dem's took control of Congress when they did.....so that again alters the math. But the point I am trying to make is I don't see a nickel's worth of difference in the two at the moment except in where each side wants to cut spending.

The conservatives want to cut it from the young, the old, and the disadvantaged,,,,,,,where the Liberals want to cut it from the rich and privledged.

November 13, 2010 at 1:25 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

As we both know by now, I'm totally with you on paring back on tax cuts on the very wealthy.

As for the decline, we were already entering a recession when Bush took office. The dot.com bubble had burst. Markets go up and down every day but we were in a recession. (If ACORN had been exposed before then I doubt the vote would have even been as close as it was). I've also said there is a time & place for both tax cuts & raises. After 9/11, tax cuts I do believe helped. I know people (on the left) like to constantly say we had a horrible 8 years of economy under Bush but the fact is after we recovered from 9/11 we did have steady economic growth & fairly low unemployment. My personal take is that the tax cuts on the very wealthy should have only lasted 3-4 years, not 10.

I'm quite used to folks playing the sympathy card - "kicking poor folks out of the emergency room because they can't pay". Baloney. Doesn't happen now, Federal law gives you the right to emergency care, regardless of your ability to pay. And that isn't going to change. There's some more of that health care "misinformation" goodoleboy was referring to...... but in Mass, emergency rooms are overflowing. People are getting tired of waiting for the average 50+ day wait to see the doctor they now have & just going to the emergency room.

I'll side with you on the bet they won't do anything about cheap illegal labor. Neither side will.

November 13, 2010 at 1:36 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

Wrong - the recession began December, 2007. The main reason the Dems took control of Congress in 2006 was the wars - people's hatred of Bush over those. If you want to put together all the policies that brought about the latest collapse, as has been already detailed many times, some of those are attributable all the way back to Clinton, with both sides sharing blame.

And I disagreee again with the sympathy line that the bad old GOP wants to cut if from the old, sick, and disadvantaged, while the Dems only want to take it from the rich & priveledged. GOP's problem is they want to cut everyone equally - and I disagree with that. Dems problem is that they want to pick and choose which rich and priveledged they cut from - just those who aren't their backers.

November 13, 2010 at 1:42 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

For some examples of my last statement (you already know where I stand on the GOP not raising taxes on the very rich) - the largest profit margins in all the health care industry belong to the giant Pharma companies - and they cut a deal & got excluded from HCR. And I don't really know any poor lawyers - but, they almost exclusively have Dems in their pockets - hence no tort reform. Not saying the GOP is any better, just giving my examples.

biscuitboy (anonymous) says...

If you make the rich pay more back in taxes unless they create jobs to earn their tax cuts....I fail to see how that just punishes the rich that don't support the the Democrats. Seems pretty across the board to me. Am I missing some proposal that slaps more taxes on the Koch Brothers and gives Bill Gates a reduction.....LOL

On the other hand cutting spending on the young, the old, and the disadvantaged....without cutting any of the subsidies perks and write offs that go to the middle and upper income brackets hardly seems equal. But I will bet we will come much closer to seeing cuts in Social Security and Medicare than we do in interest deductions, farm subsidies, and tax shelters for off-shore accounts.....Wanna Bet?

November 13, 2010 at 1:59 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

REWBA (anonymous) says...

The republican party handed the rich huge tax cuts and then took money from the poor and handed it to Haliburton to construct concentration camps throughout the united states. Those camps are not for the rich. They are for the poor.

What many people don't realize is that there is a great big war on the horizon. It will be the rich against the poor and the rich know this. They also know that they cannot convince enough poor to side with them so they will just spry us all with viruses, bomb our cities and pretend to help survivors by loading them up onto trains and send them to these camps where plastic coffins are stacked and waiting to be filled. The rich seem to think that America has too many poor people and their solutions are final.

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

For a second there, after reading your first paragraph, REWBA, I thought you were empgazfan posting under another name - LOL.

But back to reality - unless we close alot of tax loopholes, even raising taxes on the rich won't amount to much. John Kerry is the richest member of Congress & he tries to dock his boat elsewhere to avoid taxes. People like that voting to raise taxes don't give me alot of faith.

Example: This, more than anything else, really sums up my dissatisfaction with our tax system:

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/200...

As for who is doing what to who - California is a very Dem-controlled state - anyone catch the student riots over the proposed increases in tuition & spending cuts? Wouldn't that be the Democrats cutting from the poor & disenfranchized? Why don't they consider cutting entitlements & bloated pensions from the fat cat unions instead?

As for your bet that we'll see cuts in SS before interest decuctions & tax shelters - won't bet against ya there.

But don't the Dems still control both the Senate & WH? If they control 2/3 of the power..... who are you going to blame?

And this is an interesting read.... especially paragraphs 3 & 4. Not sure I agree with it, depends on how things are spun....

http://www.american.com/archive/2007/...

Since this thread is supposed to be about possums..... I apologize for hijacking it. I'll play possum for awhile on this thread ;-)

I agree that the Bush cuts did do some good early in his presidency.....But after it became clear that the rich had no intention of using their tax cuts or their TARP money to create jobs and stimulate anything but their personal net worth....those cuts should have been replaced with tax increases right then. But now....eight years later....we are still sticking to the same old plan of keeping the tax cuts for the wealthy and hoping...even praying....that they might see it in their benevolent hearts to reinvest it back in America. I don't know about you but I am not holding my breath.

I agree completely with your 2:20 post, biscuitboy. Perhaps.... had the tax cuts on the very wealthy expired, in, say, 2005..... we could be looking at another short-term cut (2-4 years) to help jump-start the economy. Conditions on the ground. But as you say... they have shown no intention whatsoever of using their tax cuts or TARP money to create or stimulate anything here other than their own net worth. (I'm not talking about small businesses, I'm talking about the very top, 6 figures +).

Did you follow my ealier link about what sums up my dissatisfaction with our tax system? Gets my blood boiling is more like it......

To keep it on-topic.... I think the very rich out there are doing alot of "playing possum" when it comes to arguing for their tax cuts....... per the link...

Actually, the only way to eliminate Americas debt and improve the economy is to eliminate entitlements. The only way to eliminate entitlements is to eliminate the recipients. Convicts locked in prisons will remain locked in but we will simply quit feeding them and shut the water off to their cells. Retirees from federal, state and local government will get the first dose of "vaccine" as they are recalled to duty to cleanse the prisons. They will be happy to accept the extra work since they haven't had a COLA in so long. The one who refuse to accept the recall to duty will join the social security recipients and those on SSI as they are moved into the former prisons that are now re-purposed as "indigent residential centers". Once occupied, the doors will be locked, food and water will be cut off and the "vaccines" will kick. The military will be called in for the clean up where these personnel will become infected and need to be "quarantined". Not to worry, it's a fast acting virus so nobody will suffer in agony. Without the burden of these leaches, the U.S. will have plenty of money to pay off debt and without the welfare scum eating all that food, we will have more to export making America profitable once again.

As per your link......the reason the tax on capital gains is lower than regular tax on income is to stimulate long term investment. Just another example of what tax policy is supposed to accomplish not carrying through to what is actually accomplished. But the rich keep getting us to believe that it does, despite all evidence to the contrary.

I already blame both/all of them - LOL :-)

Well, I truly do believe that tax cuts can stimulate investment. But everyone else on that curve (from the graph) is working, running businesses, investing, etc...... no reason why it should suddenly taper off at a certain point. I think it does more to stimulate middle-income folks and the somewhat wealthy than the very wealthy. Really, past a certain point, the numbers really don't mean much to them. They'll invest what they want and where regardless of what their tax bracket is (to a point).

They're the lazy low-down son-of-a-possums! LOL

The far right has been saying that tax cuts are good for growth and create jobs and stimulate the economy over and over like a scratched record until their followers are programed to repeat that message like brainwashed zombies despite the fact that eight years of tax breaks for billionaires has done exactly the opposite.

Tax cuts implemented by the republican congress and signed into law by bush in 2002 has stifled growth, destroyed jobs and decimated the economy. It is time to reset tax codes back to where they were under Clinton and send billionaires a bill for the back taxes.

Common usage allows for the spelling of possum. It appears both ways in most dictionaries. So there!

The English language is dynamic. Therefore it allows for such changes. I love it!

What does a possum sound like? Here, have fun with this:

Possums can growl. To mimic the noise they make, open your mouth and blow from your throat. Keep your tongue elevated at the back of your mouth as your expel your lungs. You'll make a growling sound.

Sometimes a possum makes a very loud growl, which can be a bit scary if you aren't familiar with the possum. However, some will make the sound because they are protesting. A good example is a possum that is getting a bath and begins to growl because they are protesting about the bath. Once they are removed from the bath, the growling will instantly stop.

The sound will come out in spurts, sometimes over and over, and can be quite humorous as long as you know the possum is simply protesting rather than expressing anxiety or fear.

And now you know, that a possum can growl. They also click!

So, how do you all sound when you are angry or anxioius or fearful? Huh?

Let the discussion continue...

To correct REWBA's latest misinformation (or that 90% of what he says that he doesn't believe himself) - after 2002, we did have low unemployment & a growing economy for quite a stretch. Stifling growth, cutting jobs, and destroying the economy really had nothing to do with tax cuts. Had there been ZERO Bush tax cuts in 2002.... our economy probably would have eventually recovered (probably not as fast or as vigorously) - but when the housing bubble crashed, it still would have all came down.

If you just give possums free food whenever they want (trickle-"UP" economics) - when you want them to do something for you, they just roll over and play dead. If you hitch them to the plow and demand they do something for you, (made to) - they just roll over and play dead. But if you offer them INCENTIVES........ ahhh..... there's more than one way to skin a possum.... ;-)

Yeah, they get a taxpayer funded grant to create jobs overseas; they get U.S. tax incentives to close down U.S. production; they get a cheap workforce exempt from U.S. labor laws; and they get to have a U.S. government workforce hold the doors to the largest market in the world wide open for them. First you can't expect any real dialogue to grow out of an exchange that one or both sides were goaded into. Second, it is very hypocritical for me to accuse another of being blinded by ideological loyalty when I look, sound, and act the same way. But, the best laid plans sometimes are for not.....:-(

I am at a loss as to why the Gazette ever covered the Madison story to begin with. Once it became obvious there was much more to it than one expulsion, they scrubbed all the comments and went silent, some investigative journalism.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for KAKE and WIBW either, just my opinion.

March 25, 2012 at 10:35 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

Steve_Corbin (anonymous) says...

alfalfa, and others,

The Gazette did cover this story originally. What originaly started out as a reasonable forum disscussion turned into a hodge podge of accusations and name calling, something you would expect to see on a teenagers facebook page.

I'm glad the Gazette pulled the comments. Some of them, (most), were in violation of the user agreement. I realize that they don't have time to monitor every comment and remove them individually, so the entire thread was removed.

It did not become "obvious there was much more to it than one expulsion".

It became obvious that there are some people unsatisfied with how things are done at Madison and decided to unload on this social media site. And we got spanked for it.

Anyone see the irony of it?

March 26, 2012 at 6:20 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

alfalfa (anonymous) says...

I am going to respectfully disagree with you Steve. I saw one post that was probably out of line because it named names. The last post, and the one I figure was what got them all pulled, was from someone who had worked at the school, and seemed pretty well written and within the rules to me. Since you never liked hearing about the issue anyway, I can't see how the comments getting pulled spanked you.

What was the most obvious to me was the double standard some posters have on this site. I don't live in Emporia, yet regularly read how a group of people who think they are better than everyone else run things, often to the detriment of the majority. The "proof" I get of this is people I think I can believe say it, nothing has been through a court of law, it really is all hearsay, but believable hearsay all the same. As I commented, I know several families with kids in the USD 386 school system who have talked about the clique among the teachers, and how it interferes with education for over 2 years, so it is not an unreasonable assumption to make that there is more to this story, I have no problem believing that at all.

The other thing that became obvious is some posters think since it is the Emporia Gazette, all conversation must be about Emporia. I would say if someone doesn't like a thread, don't comment on it or read it, rather than make posts on ancient threads in an effort to put it down far enough no one will see it. The Gazette is read by people who don't live in Emporia, and see it as a regional newspaper, and us outlanders do a considerable trade in Emporia, I'd like to see how much of a town there would be if only people in the Emporia city limits traded there.

The story isn't important to Emporia, but it is important to some people who read the Gazette, because in small towns the school is about all we have left, life centers around it, and we know if not for it our towns will die(because our main streets already have, Emporia's main street is main street for all of us). I guess if folks in Emporia don't want issues in the outlands covered in "their" newspaper, maybe they don't want to see any of our money either???

Steve_Corbin (anonymous) says...

alfalfa,
You made some valid points above, but why end it like you did in the last sentance?

Where was it said that the Gazette has stopped investigating this story?

They removed gossip from the threads, nothing more or less.

I plead guilty for bringing up the archived stories, but not entirely for the reason of completely burying the story.
I sometimes bring up archived threads instead of posting something I would later regret on a current thread. It's happened before, and will most likely happen again, probably now.

No, on second thought and after readin and deleting my long winded reply, I have realized you have your opinion and your views, and I have mine. You know who you are disagreeing with, I don't have that option, but that's o.k.
