Emporia State's season ended with a 42-0 loss Saturday at Washhburn. The Hornets finish the season (5-6, 3-6 MIAA). For the full story read Monday's paper.
Washburn tacked on two more touchdowns in the third as Simoneau threw two more touchdown passes.
WU 42, ESU 0 start of the fourth
The ESU offense finally came to life as Sheldon Smith had a 29-yard scramble and a four-yard run to net ESU two first downs. The Hornets drove to the WU 34 but Smith's pass was picked of by Ben Vann at the 17 and returned it to the ESU 44.
The ESU defense held on fouth-and-eight as Simoneau's pass fell incomplete, but a pass interference call gave WU a first down and new life. Simoneau finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge right before half.
WU 28, ESU 0
The Washburn offense is rolling. Simoneau threw his second TD pass of the half on a seven-yarder to Korie Henry who was wide open in the middle of the end zone. Washburn has scored on three straight drives.
WU 21, ESU 0
Washburn followed that touchdown drive with a 12-play, 87-yard touchdown drive. Dane Simoneau completed two screen passes to Cooper for 39 yards, and Simoneau ended the drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Knox.
WU 14, ESU 0 end of first quarter
ESU went three-and-out on its first drive as Adrian Abner rushed for one yard, and quarterback Sheldon Smith for three.
Washburn won the toss and on the second play of the game, Michael Luthi dropped a pick-six at the 15. The Hornets forced the Ichabods to punt, however, Brian Murphy muffed the punt and the Ichabods got the ball back at the ESU 32.
Justin Cooper then ran for 29 yards and finished the short drive with a two-yard touchdown.
WU 7, ESU 0 13:06 to play in the first
TOPEKA — It's 10 minutes until kick-off from Yager Stadium. The Emporia State Hornets are looking to close out the season on a winning note while Washburn is looking to stay in the playoff hunt.
