Nearly 300 people converged on Eastside Memorial Park on Sunday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the park’s development as well as the official unveiling of a memorial sculpture that was set last summer.
The sculpted obelisk is a memorial to all who have called the Eastside community of Emporia their home. Roger Heineken of the Emporia Eastside Community Group explained the symbolism in the sculpture created by Emporia artists Fletcher Russell and Alan Tollakson from stone donated by Pyramid Stone of Olpe.
After the unveiling, organizers brought out the roast pork, chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs for the crowd. Local residents were asked to bring covered dishes to share. And, as always, donations were accepted for future work on the park.
