Farewell to Heim
A public reception is planned from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday in honor of Emporia school district superintendent John Heim. The reception will be held at Mary Herbert.
Heim resigned last month to accept a job as executive director of the Kansas Association of School Boards in Topeka. Heim has been Emporia’s superintendent since 1997. His resignation is effective June 30.
The board of education will be hosts for the reception.

I don't believe, with all of the budget cuts and funding issues, that the school should host a reception for its employees, unless it is using voluntary contributions from individuals they work with. I'm sure that the money they budget for this reception could pay another school employee for several days, or buy a new copy machine for one of the schools. Something more practical and needed in this time of underfunding.

My, my, for all Dr. Heim has done for the schools, the community and the youth, I'm sure they can afford some tea and cookies. I seriously doubt the cost of a reception would equal several days of pay unless Emporians are working for third-world wages. Besides, if you are seriously worried about school funding, talk to your house member and senator. Did they vote for the bill to increase taxes a little bit?

Well, let's see. The average classifies staff member (meaning lunch person, janitor, para, aide, etc) makes about $9/hr and works about 6 hours a day. Thats $54. Before taxes. And so for two days thats only $108 dollars. I'm sure if he's done as much as you believe he has that there will be quite a turn out. I'm sure $100 is about right if they are just doing tea and cookies, but for someone who is apparently so loved by the community I'm sure it will be a larger amount than that. My point remains.
