“Drill, baby, drill.”
Those were the words of former vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who by now should be eating her words as an estimated 210,000 gallons of oil has been spewing into the Gulf of Mexico since the oil rig accident in last month on the drill platform Deepwater Horizon, according to CNN.
Since the oil rig accident, the oil slick is spreading across the Gulf of Mexico and washing up on shore along the Louisiana barrier islands, also according to CNN. Multiple efforts to stop the flow of oil and plug the leak have failed.
BP, which operates the well and was leasing the rig from Transocean, inserted a tube into the well, which is designed to capture some of the oil and pump it to the surface, but it’s still unknown how much oil the tube will capture.
The effect of this accident is massive. Birds, fish, the fishing industry and even the tourism industry are feeling the effects of this accident. And it’s also important to remember the 11 lives that were lost when the rig exploded on April 20. More lives will be lost in the form of wildlife, including birds like terns, pelicans and plovers, to name only a few. The birds will be threatened if the oil reaches their habitat.
Although companies do take precautions to prevent accidents from happening, precautions are not foolproof, and one only has to turn on the television or pick up a paper to figure that out.
An article in Monday’s Gazette quoted Hines Trulock, who works for Diamond Offshore Drilling. Trulock talked about the precautions his company takes to prevent even a paper cut. This is commendable. But not foolproof.
Accidents happen. Lives are lost. And this generation, along with future ones, will pay for it.
Perhaps Palin should rethink her “Drill, baby, drill” motto in light of this horrible tragedy. The oil is indeed flowing freely in the Gulf — but not the way even Palin had hoped.

I read Mr. Trulock's interview, he said that this is the first time we had an accident like this one. My contention is that just 1 event like this is too many. Alaska is still reeling from the Exxon spill many years ago, word is now this could head out in a current and up the East Coast, just keeps getting worse...

Reality check: SOMEONE is going to drill for that oil. China is already drilling in our hemisphere. Would you rather have a Chinese drilling platform off the coast of America or a British or an American drilling company? Do you think that they are equally as concerned or as trustworthy? Mexican standards and technology are in the Stone Age compared to China’s, let along ours, and they are drilling seemingly everywhere they can.
If the Chi-Com’s drill it means that the oil will be transported thousands of miles in tankers. Have you seen their tankers? Have you seen their safety record on ANYTHING, from toys to drilling to mining to manufacturing dry-wall? Oil tankers are far more prone to catastrophic accidents than drilling platforms are.
Do your homework and read about the Mexican Pemex spill in 1979 in the Gulf of México. How did that effect the ecology? It was a MUCH bigger spill but do you even remember it?
If you want to show your support then quit using oil. Do you think that is a reality in the near future? Planes crash, do we suspend air travel? Cars crash by the hundreds if not thousands every day, do we ban driving? What about the ecological nightmares caused by huge fires in California or hurricanes or tornado's and volcano's…yes, we must be as careful as careful can be, but it is simply unrealistic to call for any sort of ban of off-shore drilling, particularly since there are already so many restrictions on drilling on land.
Yes, rest assured, even if you ban drilling off of America’s coasts, the oil will still be harvested, and perhaps by those without our best interests at heart.

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of Sarah Palin and won't vote for her.
Just wondering, how many years had that rig been operating? How many years ago did Mrs. Palin say that? So, is there really a connection or was this just political slander?

She was interviewed just recently, right after the gulf oil spill and said that despite this spill, she still believed that drilling should continue because the benefits still outweigh the number of accidents that occur. She didn't use those exact words, but I did see the interview on CNN where she explained briefly her belief in continuing.

I believe it should continue too. People who are anti-republican criticize them for warring over oil-rich lands, calling them greedy, but then they criticize oil drilling that lessens our dependence on oil from those unstable countries. Meanwhile, the critics all use gasoline powered automobiles, lawn mowers, snowblowers, etc. as well as natural gas stoves, hot water heaters, furnaces, etc.
I appreciate bloomsbury's comments above. Very good points.

I don't buy the whole some one else will do it argument. It is logical to assume that as more and more off shore drilling is done that the frequency of events such as this one will increase, we cannot afford this.
Also for every time there is a costly recall of a product over in China it causes companies to drop them or buy elsewhere, maybe even American. Recalls are extremely costly and most important is that companies lose the customer trust, sometimes for good, don't think for a second they will not weigh the possible cost of a recall when buying products from a questionable dealer.

It appears that Brandy wants to attack Sarah Palin. It seems that is a major point of her article. Using her logic, I would like to make a little parable. Wichita, a while back, had two brothers of a different race than the people who's home they broke in, raping, killing, etc. One woman escaped after having been shot, to tell the story. Using Brandy's logic, shouldn't all people of that race be locked up? Her bias comes through loud and clear. Isn't there just as good (if not better) a case for the federal government's lack of enforcement of rules and guidelines? Hmmm......maybe those regulators were like the SEC, doing what on their computers?

Will continuing to drill prevent more emphasis from being placed on alternative sources? That's my concern.
While the Wright Brothers not quitting after their first crash is a good analogy, we must also admit that flight has not destroyed huge ecosystems as has offshore drilling.
I agree with dalelinn here about the fed's lack of enforcement. From time to time, we've even seen complicity to be the problem. I'd like to see investigation and heads roll here.
If we continue to drill, then I'd like to see some kind of discovery with regard to cleanup because these spills will also continue to happen. After all, it was additional technology that kept planes in flight. We are not still running off of hills against the wind to get aloft.

Brandy doesn't understand if oil prices go through the roof again, our unemployment will go even higher. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't lose her job as papers would be more expensive to deliver, and get printed and hauled from Lawrence. We need to start drilling and get rid of the foreign oil coming into the US. We had better be careful of what we wish for, as it may come true and five dollar gas would not be to far behind. Try and fit that into your budget.

As a native Floridian, drilling for oil in our oceans puts us in a very precarious situation. Our coastlines may be ruined, our wildlife is affected, and this greatly affects our agriculture.
I find it ironic that someone mentioned unemployment will go even higher if oil prices increase. I suggest that you come and visit the coastal communities of the five states thus far directly impacted by this massive oil spill.
Most of our "foreign oil" is from the Americas--Canada and Mexico supply more than 70% of the imported oil that we use.
Yes, we do need oil. But more drilling? No.
I also believe that the "drill, baby, drill" statement uttered by Ms. Palin was cavalier. No matter whether we are for or against drilling, it's a most serious undertaking and we have to proceed--however we do--with caution and safety nets in place so that oil doesn't get dragged into the gulf stream, as it seems it's going to. As a country, we cannot afford cavalier attitudes about this issue as Ms. Palin expressed, nor can we as a country afford cutesy phrases of a life-and-death issue.

There is so much we could do but haven't, but Obama is trying. An auto uses 17% of the gas it consumes to power the vehicle, the rest is wasted. Oil is our power for the foreseeable future, I believe we should do a Manhattan style project to deliver more fuel efficient engines and develop our shale oil resources to stop the transfer of wealth to other countries. Presently, shale oil extraction is profitable at $55 a barrel, I am sure we can do better as technology advances. As for Palin, she is a classic example of a Republican hail Mary that fumbled before she even got the pass off, an absolute joke that only the totally desperate would take seriously.

I found this slide show on my msn news this morning. I hope you can view it. I came away wondering why all the protesters aren't spending their time cleaning up the oil coming ashore on the beaches. Yes, I know, they are doing what protesters do best, gaining attention to the problem, but those people running with the black tarp on a Florida beach were just full of it and I don't mean oil.
I was glad to see the bales of hay on the water's edge in Alabama. A Minnesotta farmer donated many tons of it. Hay is hollow, he explained, and it floats where it could also be used loose on top of the water to trap the oil.
I get your point, Oh4. So to satisfy the critics we should stop flying? There goes the economy again with lost jobs and business people who can't make contacts. Or war planes that can't...you get the picture.

My point is that most of the things that we use that have advanced our society use oil. All kinds of our technological advances contribute to the destruction of ecosystems...even planes.
I am not happy that this oil spill has happened, but I do not think it warrants pulling out all the stops in using our resources. Crude oil is a part of nature. Nature was created with processes to resolve itself over time. I have to believe that during underwater earthquakes that we rarely have any knowledge of, crude oil gets released into the ocean. This accident had human hands involved and was, therefore, a more concentrated and aggravated incident. At the same time, human hands and lots of oil money are involved in speeding up the resolution of it. It will all balance out and it will be okay....not ideal (it's an imperfect world, after all) but okay. I wouldn't be saying that if we were ignoring the problems the accident has caused, but we aren't.

You better believe this "accident" had human hands. What it also had was just plain greed when BP told their managers on that rig to press forward without listening to the warnings that were being given to them at the time about a piece of equipment that had begun to fail. Eyewitnesses have reported that.
Now we have this from MSN news:
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said Saturday that offshore oil drilling could only go forward if there were assurances that a disaster like the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill would not happen again.
As Obama officially unveiled a commission to investigate the accident, he issued a stern message that while keeping pressure on firms involved in the still-uncapped spill — BP, Halliburton and Transocean Ltd — he would also hold Washington accountable for mending its ways.
Sorry Mr. President, not strong enough for me. "Assurances"? What, from BP who lied to begin with about how much oil was pouring into the gulf.
I prefer, "All drilling will stop right now until several safety measures are proven and in place, even if it takes years."
What is it Rand Paul said? "Accidents happen" as he talked about the coal mine disasters in his own state, as he stated that offshore drilling must continue. What a bunch of crap typical of Richie Rich who doesn't have to go to work in a coal mine or on an oil rig.

For the simple reason that they are without doubt pouring plenty of cash into the pockets and bank accounts of every congressman/woman or politician, who is greedy or corrupt enough to take the " money " and look the other way, as they have been for decades . It will continue to be business as usual in D. C., and elsewhere, until the countrys' greedy, corrupt, political " RATS NEST " is cleaned out .. from top to bottom.
