Fits the crime
Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Oftentimes our law enforcement bears the brunt of sharp criticism. I myself have been guilty of such criticisms in retrospect. However I would like to congratulate the Emporia Sheriff’s Department on a job well done last Friday, May 14.
Upon my return home I came upon Officer Samuels supervising the excavation of a load of trash that was dumped over a bridge and onto our property. It was my understanding that the deal was that if the perpetrators picked up the trash there would be no citations issued.
I found this to be an equitable solution, wading through poison ivy, nettles, and mud in the dark of night must have been a very disagreeable and humbling experience. My aspiration is that the repercussions of this event will circulate and people will discontinue dumping in the country. Many of us work very hard to take care of our properties and pride ourselves in the stewardship of our land.
I would like to congratulate Officer Samuels on a job well done and for invoking a punishment that fit the crime.

We also had "secret" dumpers that were too dumb to realized personal info was in the trash. I loved watching them slogging through the weeds, mud and muck as they had to pick up their trash in front of everyone driving by.

Way to go, Sheriff's Dept. This makes my heart sing to hear justice is being done, especially against sneaky people who doubted they'd get caught.

Great idea, bet this does more to deter dumping than fines.

What a great idea, however, why not have them clean up some of the other unidentified dumpers messes that the county pays to clean up too. Recently read where the costs of cleaning up after unidentified dumpers in the county had skyrocketed, I would think this would bring down those costs as well as serve as a deterrent to other dumpers. They could experience what it is like to clean up after someone else who is abusing mother nature.

That's awesome! Excellent idea.
Goodoleboy, not to nitpick, but it's Lyon County Sheriff Department, not ESD.

I am very happy that the Sheriff Department followed thru on the phone call that was made to them alerting them to the illegal dumping

What about this indicated that Deputy(?) Samuels was the originator of this policy? I think conclusions are being jumped to before slippery slopes are being concocted.
