Coburn's expands menu

Friday, May 14, 2010

Coburn’s Family Restaurant, 2708 W. 18th Ave., has made some tasty changes to its menu with the addition of several new nightly and weekend specials including spaghetti, pot roast and chicken fried chicken.

Coburn’s, which is owned by Brenda and Jeff Coburn, was opened 12 years ago by the Coburn family and now employs 20 people. Jeff Coburn said they recently decided to add several menu items, which are offered in the form of daily specials.

They changes came after the couple sat down with longtime employees to expand the menu. The new specials are:

• Monday night: All-you-can-eat homemade soup and salad bar.

• Wednesday night: Breakfast at night, full menu available.

• Friday night: All-you-can-eat spaghetti with side salad and breadstick.

• Saturdays and Sundays: Breakfast served until noon.

• Sundays: plate special — something new each week which could include pot roast, meat loaf, baked ham and chicken fried chicken with potato, vegetable, salad, roll, tea or coffee.

The spaghetti is made with a high-quality sauce, Jeff Coburn said, adding that he spices up the sauce with his own ingredients as well. The spaghetti has been a hit with the public, he added.

Coburn’s has operated out of the same location for 12 years. Their standard menu has everything from sandwiches to dinners and desserts. They also serve roasted chicken and salads. Breakfast items include pancakes, omelets, biscuits and gravy and breakfast sandwiches. Customers can dine in the restaurant or get their food to go either inside or through the drive-thru window.

The restaurant’s owners pride themselves in being local and buying completely locally, Brenda Coburn said. From the food to any maintenance on the building or appliances, it’s all done with local help, she said.

Jeff Coburn added that it’s the local customers who keep the restaurant going.

“For the most part, we cater to anybody who wants to come in,” he said. “It’s the local people who take care of us, and we take care of them.”

Coburn credits the restaurant’s success to good service and good food.

“We have people who eat here every day and sometimes twice a day,” he said. “That is huge for our business.”

The restaurant also caters, something that is heating up this time of year, Jeff Coburn said.

“We do a lot of catering jobs,” he said.

Brenda Coburn said supporting what is already established in the community is important, especially with the economy.

“It’s so important right now in this economy that we try to take care of what we already have,” she said.

• Coburn’s is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. To reach the restaurant, call 341-9701.

Well I'm glad your customers that you do have think they can afford to eat there sometimes twice a day, cause I aint been there in years since you raised all your prices like you were a fancy high end restaurant, when you aint no different than any other fast food joint. Emporia is all the same crap!

If a locally-owned business such as Coburn's can cook food tasty enough to back their higher price tag, power to them :) They've obviously been doing something right.

I'm not crazy about their biscuits and gravy. Gravy is too thin, too little sausage, and biscuits taste like frozen ones. Sorry Coburn's. Ever see a program called Drive-inns, Diners and Dives? I wish we had some of those places around here. The host always comments on the prices too and they seem very reasonable. How do those people do it and still offer a reasonable price unlike places around here.

Please serve spaghetti al dente.

I ate at Coburns once and once only, not to long after they opened/took over and thought their prices were " overpriced " for the quality of food, even then. Haven' t been back since.

A locally owned small business that employs locals. Yeah, I can see why so many people are complaining about it. Across the street? Isn't that a big chain restaurant? Like the Wal-mart of restaurants? People say "shop local" "shop small business" but they put down a successful small locally owned business. I personally don't eat there either because of the location but I'm glad they are successful and employ some folks.

Are you kidding me? This place is great! Awesome limeades, malts, and there burgers are so much better than the chain restaurants. All their food (except the breakfast) tastes like hometown mom and pop restaurant fair. Good job Coburns! Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I've had a couple of bad news breakfasts there and biscuits and gravy pretty bad...bad enough that I prefer Micky D's, and that's gettin' down there...hash-browns that were crunchy raw and without salt. But they do have their own crowd & there own niche so god bless 'em.
But the idea of them making spaghetti is kinda scary...

I'm with "seriouslyfolks," Coburns rocks! I've always had good service when I've been in there, better than the national-chain competitors. Added bonus, I'd much rather spend my money here knowing it doesn't get shipped off to a national HQ several states away never to be seen/circulated again. I'm referring to you Wal-Mart, McD's, BK & the others. Spend locally and buy American.
