ST. JOSEPH, MO. — Late Friday night after Alli Volkens and her teammates had celebrated Emporia State’s first-ever NCAA National championship with a 65-53 win over Fort Lewis, Volkens spotted a group of friends on the Civic Arena court.
The long, lanky center squatted down and quietly approached her friends from behind for a surprise attack.
Funny, that’s exactly what Volkens and her fellow 15th-ranked Lady Hornets did over the last three weeks.
The sneaky-good 15th-ranked Lady Hornets lost three of five going into the NCAA Tournament, lost out on winning an MIAA regular season title and conference tournament title, and they were somewhat of an afterthought as a four seed at the South Central Regional.
But something changed at the Regional when they started playing in-your-face defense and became balanced on offense.
