Sports page outrage

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the sports section (Monday) night.

There was a nice top of the fold article on ESU’s upcoming game against Michigan Tech — expected and well deserved. Right hand column article about KU’s loss complete with photo of hugging players — once again expected. Bottom fold, West Virginia versus MU with a photo of a West Virginia player — are you kidding me?

I turned to Pages 10 and 11. Big AP article about Purdue and A&M, a continuation of the ESU, KU and MU stories from the page before, more AP articles about broken brackets and underdogs and the tournament roundup with a headline about Cornell.

Where was the article about K-State winning on Saturday and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen?

The Gazette is a Kansas newspaper and K-State is the only Kansas team that advanced on Saturday and as such they deserve respect and coverage. KU burst brackets and broke hearts when they lost Saturday, but that should not have overshadowed the fact that Pullen and the rest of the K-State team played a great game Saturday night against BYU.

Would have been nice to have read about it Monday in the Gazette.

The Gazette apologizes for the insult that Kansas State University fans felt when they read Monday’s paper.

There was not, however, any slight intended in the section, which hit the streets on Monday afternoon. All of the AP game stories from the NCAA tournament published Monday were about Sunday games. We did not publish any stories from games played Saturday, 48 hours before we published.

When it comes to covering the University of Kansas and K-State (as well as professional Kansas teams), The Gazette relies exclusively on the Associated Press. For Monday editions, AP moved the story recapping KU’s season, which was published Monday. AP did not move a separate K-State story until Monday, which was published in Tuesday’s Gazette.

As K-State continues its march through the tournament, look for more coverage from the Associated Press. We will continue to look for ways to provide coverage for fans that work with our production cycles.

The AP doesnt have any info why not just turn on the TV?

Gwen, Correct me if I'm wrong, but KU's game was on SATURDAY... No? Which would assist in our confusion because to my recollection, K-states game was also on SATURDAY... Do you see my confusion?

Nevermind, I guess I understand now... The only reason there was anything printed about KU was because the AP moved it... I got ya...

kuSportsPA: The KU story that ran in Monday's Gazette was a season recap. It was not a game story from Saturday's match-up against the University of Northern Iowa.

It would just be nice for The Emporia Gazette to cover Kansas State University once in a while. Why is it that we have to rely on the AP to do our SPORTS articles???? Seriously......excuses.....excuses......excuses......do we not have any sports writers here........It's just upsetting that there have been NO articles about Kansas State getting into the Sweet Sixteen in our LOCAL paper by a LOCAL sports writer.
Be Proud, Be Purple......EMAW.....Always a PROUD supporter.

Ms. Larson: How do you explain the fact that you STILL didn't run an article about K-State's win in last night's paper? Football is over, this is basketball season.

Who is the sports editor? Can he not write an article that alot of people are interested in? If not, lets get rid of him and let the AP do all of your writing. And as far as the lame excuse..."We did not publish any stories from games played Saturday, 48 hours before we published." Do you publish anything that happens on saturday?

NLCpride: Our sports editor is in St. Joseph, Mo., covering the Emporia State University women's basketball team making its own run to a national championship.

anonymous1: If we weren't going a run a game story two days after the game, why would we run the game story three days after the game? If you will pick up a print edition of Tuesday's Gazette and today's Gazette, you will see K-State sports stories in both papers. We do not, however, post them to our Web site.

So, unless you have a subscription, buy a copy on the newsstand or look at a print copy at the library, you'll never know what KU and K-State stories we put in our paper.

Not to continue with the negative tone or anything, but maybe you should ask a little more from your Sports Editor, I work a great deal with collegiate sports writers, and I do know that the majority of them have the ability to cover more than one team/sporting event at a time.

Want information on K-State? Subscribe to the Manhattan paper or The Hog Report. Either way, quit whining about what you expect out of a small town paper. I think they do quite a good job and as she said, their sports editor has his/her hands busy following a more local teams march through the madness.

Give them a break.

Personally, I expect more from a world renowned paper. You cannot honestly put William Allen White's name to everything you do and give sub-standard work to show for it. This was really just laziness. K-State's accomplisments are a big deal, your coverage should reflect such.
Furthermore, I have tried unsuccessfully to subscribe to your paper several times. I gave up trying when I couldn't get my paper delivered properly on a daily basis, and got little or no response from calling to get that remedied. You can only complain about my lack of a subscription, when your own delivery of product is exemplary...I'm just saying.

Just more proof to show that newspapers are dying...

EsqEB: the Manhattan Mercury is one of the worst papers I have ever read, I would recommend staying far, far away.

akamai: Gardening is a niche, making local advertising dollars worth less, why not read a garden magazine or gardening blog?

glarson: After that game I would have wrote a story about the game for you, for free. So I am sure you could have managed. You do have journalists working there right?

"So, unless you have a subscription, buy a copy on the newsstand or look at a print copy at the library, you'll never know what KU and K-State stories we put in our paper."

Really? You just basically said "get-lost" to a medium that cuts cost many times over for distribution, reaches larger audiences, and allows for much more innovation than ink and paper. I guess, if the Gazette wants to stay in the 1900s thats their decision, but the audience will just move past them.

What could you possibly learn about K-State's win on Monday that you didn't already know on Sunday? Why on earth would the Gazette waste the space on a two-day old story.

Folks, it is the 21st Century. You can get your news whenever and wherever you like.

I would rather the Gazette staff focus on coverage of local news and sports in a timely manner than waste time, effort and space covering news that can be found in about a zillion other places.

Do you really expect the Gazette sports staff to write about KU and KState? How many hours in the day do you expect them to work?

And before you start (or continue) bashing the local coverage, spend a week at the Gazette (or any other newspaper) and see just how challenging the job can be. The hours are long, the pay sucks and benefits are next to nothing.

The Gazette isn't perfect. And no, it's not the newspaper of W.A. White's years. Love it or leave it, its what you got. You would be lucky to find anyone who can do it better.

Mickie- your comments were perfectly written. You hit the nail on the head. Sad that we rely so heavy on the AP stories. Its not like we were asking for front or full page coverage. Just a mention would have been nice.

akamai- they don't usually write garden stories for the sports section. That is space is reserved for sports articles.

tmegredy-i don't care if the story is a 2 day old basketball story. OUR point is that there should have been some mention of it on MONDAY furthermore if the tables had been turned and your favorite team had been left out in the cold......there would not have been enough space on this blog site for all the
upset fans.

Steve_Corbin- WE CARE... and as far as your posted comment. I have seen plenty of your posts about issues that you have opinions about...people have probably wanted to post the same to YOU!! Especially concerning your SMOKING BAN posts...

I have some iris that I transplanted that I am also a little anxious to see come up. I hope they do and have the anticipated sculpting effect on the edge of my lawn. I planted some new crocus and tulip bulbs too, and I am starting to see tiny green tips, but I think some squirrels made off with a few of them, so my pattern and spacing is now off. Hopefully it's just a matter of a few slow starters, but I doubt it.
I was really glad to hear the frogs yesterday. I was a little worried that the weekend freeze would do them in, but they must have found safety. I don't really like frogs up close, but I love to listen to their songs. I'm glad I didn't judge by the frogs and robins when to put my flower pots and boxes back out, though. I'm going to give it another two weeks or so.
This is a nice gardening thread...just in time for all the exciting arrivals and returns of spring! I am a little confused about the untimely interruptions in it by some posters talking about some sports thingy. Oh well. There's no accounting for some folks. ☺

Yes, kudos!

Thanks, mellen. Do you do much gardening yourself, or do you have to content yourself with admiring the gardening around you? I remember back when I used to rent and it was so hard to not have flowers. I did talk one landlord (the best one in town) into planting three tiny plants into an undefined area that mud always washed into. Now that I have kids, I have to be very careful what I plan and plant or it's a waste of effort.
I was so disappointed when the gardening expo was canceled this past weekend. I haven't heard if it has a reschedule date......if the EG could include this info in this great gardening thread, that would be wonderful!

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Spring is here and that means I'm going to have to mow...... like ...... every month or something for awhile or something. My wife worked up some dirt in the yard and planted some flowers and now I'm going to have to mow those too when they come up or something. The good thing about a flower garden is the ground is pretty soft from it being worked or something so my cat, Mr. Fluffykins, doesn't irritate the repetitive stress injury in his wrists when he's diggin' in the dirt to do his business. I've since got him an ergonomic keyboard but the damage in his wrists is irreversible I'm afraid. He sure is thankful for flower gardens with nicely worked soil or something. Good gardening story by the way or something.

For the record, (before this became a gardening thread). I am not a big K-State fan. I do however feel that if it is big to a sizable portion of your readership, you may want to at least mention it. By the time anyone gets their paper it is no longer "news", quite frankly it is simply recognition. Since they didn't get any recognition, they can be upset.

Secondly, this paper gave excellent work, which in turn gave way to readership and many subscribers. It doesn't work the other way around. If you want people to buy, then increase the quality and pride in your work.

Lastly, as I have said before, I tried to subscribe to the paper 4 times in the last 2 years. Each time I would only receive my paper intermittently, and little was done to fix this problem. However, this last time I tried to get a subscription, I didn't even receive the bill so they stopped delivering. I have given up.

I have heard that the sports section of a newspaper is really good mulch. You can use it in sheets for weed control, or in shreds to help keep the water near the plant's roots. Have any of you ever tried this? I don't know if it really matters if there is a story about K-State for this or not.
I think seriouslyR has been using Mr. Fluffykins' catnip(Nepeta cataria) already. I truly hope that he learns the difference between mowing his wife's flowers and mowing AROUND them before his first mowing. or something.

I put the sports page down in the cat business box before I put the litter in so the liquid business doesn't cause the wet clumps to stick to the bottom of the box. Ooops, sorry for going off topic, back to garden talk.
