ST. JOSEPH, MO. — Emporia State is headed to the Final Four.

Alli Volkens scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Lady Hornets to a 91-85 win over third-ranked Michigan Tech on Tuesday night at the Elite Eight.

Sophia Lenard, like Volkens, came off the bench to scored 22 points, and Cassondra Boston scored 19 points.

ESU trailed 37-35 at half, and Volkens carried ESU for stretches in the second half, scoring 22 of her game-high 28. Volkens made 10 of 11 shots and 8 of 10 at the free throw line. As a team, the Lady Hornets shot 56.9 percent.

ESU is headed to the Final Four for the first time since 1999. The Lady Hornets will face undefeated and top-ranked Gannon on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

WooHOO! Go ESU! I sure hope Emporia starts supporting these ladies a little better, there needs to be a lot of exposure on this, it's a HUGE deal for ESU!

Way to go Lady Hornets. Yes, I agree with you, Lucy. This is a HUGE deal. It is so special to reach the Elite Eight. It is sad that the retired Emporia community does a better job supporting the team than the university does. How embarrassing for the school and the music department that the pep band couldn't make a two hour trip to St. Joe to support the team???? What's up with that? Truly embarrassing. I mean two hours away and we can't produce a band but the team we played is 3 states away and had a great band. So many folks asked us last night, "hey, where's your band?" Perhaps in these tight budget times if we can't bring the pep band then spend the band money on something else that we can do right and dismantle the band.

Well, GO HORNETS....you are so good, so special and fun to watch you don't need a stinking band anyway. GOOD LUCK TONIGHT

Plus, they had great 'spirit'... absolutely captivating to watch and listen to - Kudos Michigan Tech Band.

They made our kids look like they don't know how to party.

Perhaps if the Hornet Revue can't show, we could hire Michigan Tech since they don't have a game to play for... plus they have the same colors!

GO HORNETS!
