KHP reports on accident

Two taken to hospital

Monday, March 22, 2010

Preliminary information from the Kansas Highway Patrol blames a left-hand turn for a two-vehicle accident that resulted in one of the vehicles' overturning at South Avenue and Prairie Street about 3:25 p.m. on Monday.

According to the KHP report, a 1998 Plymouth Neon driven by Erik Yoriel Juarez-Morales, 15, was southbound on Prairie Street when it turned east onto South Avenue in front of a 2009 Ford pickup truck driven by Lyon County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Broyles, 33, of Madison.

The sheriff's department truck "T-boned" the Neon, the KHP report said.

The Neon rolled once and came to rest on its wheels on the northeast corner of the intersection, the KHP report stated.

Juarez-Morales and Broyles both were taken to Newman Regional Health for examination and treatment.

Both drivers were wearing safety restraints.

The car and the truck were towed from the scene of the accident.

I'm not understanding how the left hand turn was blamed for the accident. Isn't there a stop sign at South Ave. making the southbound vehicle have the right of way?

That is good. It could have been pretty bad. I've been in two car accidents(I wasn't the driver in either), one with a seat belt and one without. The one without the seat belt was way more painful and it's amazing I survived. The one with a seat belt, I was fine. Seat belts ....... good.
