ESU goes 3-0 in softball tourney

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Emporia State used its unexpected home field advantage once again on Friday at the MIAA Crossover.

The Hornets finished a perfect 3-0 at the round-robin tournament with two run-rule victories on Friday. The Hornets won Friday’s opener 10-1 over Pittsburg State and finished the tournament with a 14-3 win over Missouri Southern.

The tournament was originally supposed to be played at Central Missouri, but it was moved to ESU because of poor field conditions at UCM.

In home wins this week on Wednesday and Thursday, Emporia State won because of its pitching staff. On Friday, the offense had a banner day. Emporia State got 10 runs over the first two innings in Game Two and finished with 17 hits and two homers in the five-inning run-rule win.

Abby Hughes went 2 for 4 with a home run and had four RBIs. Jennna Potter was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Miranda Campbell went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Kaitlin Martin hit her third home run of the season and scored three runs.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Sharp (2-1) won her second game of the season, pitching all five innings and striking out five.

The Hornets only needed five innings to beat Pittsburg State as well.

They led 4-0 going into the fourth when Linda Ketter, Angela Mahan and Jessica Brewer led off with three straight singles.

Miranda Campbell cleared the bases with a grand slam to put ESU ahead 8-0. After Amanda Self walked, Katie Huffman homered to put ESU ahead 10-0.

Campbell finished 3 for 3 with two homers and seven RBIs.

Jennifer Heerey (8-1) got her second win of the week, giving up three hits and one unearned run.

The Hornets won their fourth and fifth straight games and improved to 17-7 with the two wins.

They are off until Thursday, when St. Edwards comes to town for a doubleheader at Turnbull Field.
