Pats on the Back

Friday, March 19, 2010

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

Patty Delmott, who created a card that has been chosen as one of 33 finalists in Hallmark’s Birthday Your Way contest. The contest has received more than 2,500 entries.

• The Olpe Lady Eagles basketball team, which took the 2A State championship last weekend and came away with a perfect season. The Lady Eagles were ranked No. 1 in their class throughout the season.

• All who took the time to submit essays and videos for the Emporia Building Futures’ I Choose Emporia Contest.

• ESU track athletes Brooke Kent and Briar Ploude, who both earned All-American status at the Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships last week in Albuquerque, N.M.

• Emporia High’s junior varsity boys basketball team, which finished a perfect 18-0 season last weekend.

• Olpe Junior High School student Kelsi DeLong, who tied for sixth place Saturday afternoon during The Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee at Topeka. Kelsi previously placed second at the Lyon County Spelling Bee.

• Emporia High wrestling coach Dennis Charbonneau, who was named Class 5A Coach of the Year by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association. The group named EHS senior Mark Kolmer Class 5A Senior Wrestler of the Year.

• Olpe firefighters and friends and family who helped build an addition to the Olpe Fire Department building to house equipment and provide space for community groups. The project was funded by the W.S. and E.C. Jones Trust, Emil Babinger Trust, the City of Olpe and Fire District No. 1.

• Kim Redeker and Toni Bowling, co-owners of Emporia’s Sweet Granada, which opened The Sweet Granada Production Kitchen in downtown Olpe. The new location gives the family-owned business more space for production, which is allowing it to expand its selling market. Both the kitchen and Olpe Fire Station will celebrate with open houses from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

• The Emporia State University women’s basketball team, which is headed to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time since 2006. The Lady Hornets rolls through the Regional tournament, defeating Northeastern State 76-45 in the championship game. They open play in the Elite Eight tournament on Tuesday.
