For the last six days, The Gazette has been printing submissions for the Emporia Building Futures competition “I choose Emporia.” As the name implies, people submitted letters and videos telling why they like living in Emporia.
The contest has been wonderful, and it has been refreshing to hear why people like to call Emporia home.
The people submitting entries ranged in age from college students to people in their 60s. Despite their age differences, there were common themes that essentially revolved around Emporia’s simple pleasures.
Several commented on how they were drawn to the area because of the beauty of Emporia and the Flint Hills. Several said they planned to stay only a short time, but never left because they liked how nice people were. Some talked about how a small town was a nice place to raise a family.
Some of our favorite quotes were:
- “Emporia chose me to work, live, play, start and raise my family, and I am glad it did.” — Alfonso Rascon
- “Emporia chose me. She attracted me with her beauty, her open arms and her opportunities. She gave me my life as it is today. She gave me happiness, hope and a bright future.” — Brandy Nance
- “This town lasts because of its people and their never give up attitude. Emporia suits me just fine. I like Emporia.” — Sharon McGill
Since we have been running the articles, people have been calling and asking whether they can submit their own essays. Our answer — of course. We are happy to run them on this page.
The Building Futures contest is over, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from sharing with the community their stories of why they choose Emporia.

I have enjoyed reading all of them and hope you continue to print new "I Choose Emporia" as they come along. Reminders of the positives we sometimes forget.

The thing I like about living in Emporia is every once in a while, someone will tell me a story about my grandfather or grandmother and that's pretty neat. You can't put a price on it.
