Driving videos
The Kansas Department of Transportation continues its series of KDOT videos, “Drunk Tank — The Quiz Show,” with two new videos posted on YouTube. This series lets potential drunk drivers know just what they face in terms of penalties. In Kansas, those penalties include mandatory jail time.
The “webisodes” use humor to deliver a serious message, using a quiz show format combined with actual news footage of arrest intake procedures, stated the news release. All videos can be seen on the KDOT YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/drivesafekansas. For more information, call Neal Thurman at (816) 842-8111.
Bereavement camp
For the second year, Hospice Care of Kansas will hold a bereavement camp June 4 through 6 for children and teenagers, 7 through 17, who are having difficulty with the death of a loved one. The camp, “Healing Hearts — We’ll Laugh Again,” will be held at Horizon Camp and Recreation Center near Arkansas City.
Staff for the camp are Hospice Care of Kansas professionals and trained volunteers, all of whom have undergone background checks. There also will be a camp nurse and security staff. Structured time will be combined with leisure activities. There are no other children’s bereavement camps in the area, so Hospice Care of Kansas made a commitment to meet this need, stated the news release.
According to the news release, approximately 90 percent of students will experience the the death of a loved one or close friend before finishing high school. Research indicates these children are at a much greater risk for depression, substance abuse and suicide.
The deadline for applications is April 16. For more information or to receive a brochure or application, call toll free (888) 276-5757 or email: bbachman@hospicecareofkansas.com. Applications will be reviewed before acceptance. Space is limited.
