Free event gives taste of Symphony in the Flint Hills
The Flint Hills will be coming to Emporia next week in a prelude concert for the upcoming fifth annual Symphony in the Flint Hills.
On Tuesday, an ensemble of four string players will appear at the Granada Theatre to preview this year’s event. The musicians will play a selection of songs to match the prairie landscape, according to Emily Hunter, executive director of Symphony in the Flint Hills, Inc.
This year’s Symphony in the Flint Hills is already an anticipated event. The 5,000 tickets that were offered sold out in just under two hours, Hunter said.
“Not everybody can get out there,” she said. “Not everybody can go to the symphony. We just want to bring the Flint Hills to the main street of Emporia.”
Tuesday’s program will begin at 5:30 p.m. with presentations by ranching historian Jim Hoy and Flint Hills poet Steve Hind. The Kansas City Symphony ensemble will play at 6:30.
“We want to provide this to the Emporia community,” Hunter said. “We want to heighten an appreciation of the Flint Hills, and have people come and enjoy a lovely concert and a talk by some people who really know what they’re talking about.”
Tickets will be free while supplies last, with a limit of four per person. They are available at ESB Financial, 801 Merchant St.
Although tickets for the June event are sold out, there will be a drawing for two of them at the prelude concert. Guests must be present to win.
The Symphony in the Flint Hills with special guest Lyle Lovett will take place on June 12 on Flint Hills ranch land owned by Ed Bass of Fort Worth.
