The 18th-ranked Emporia State baseball team played with more fire on Monday, but still came away with a split in their doubleheader with No. 4 Central Missouri at Trusler Sports Complex.
The Hornets rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first game to win 7-2, but couldn’t keep the Mules from winning the series, with Central winning Game Two by an 8-2 score.
Game One started off inauspiciously for the Hornets, as pitcher Jake Hosey’s first pitch was pounded to centerfield by Central’s Chance Tuttle for a home run. In the second, Hosey surrendered 3 hits, but helped his own cause with a pickoff and a heads-up defensive play, tagging a runner out at the plate on a squeeze bunt attempt. After that, Hosey shut down the Mules’ offense and gave his team a chance to fight back.
