Wichita Heights will have its chance to repeat as Class 6A’s boys champions tonight after defeating Leavenworth 83-78 in Friday’s semifinals at White Auditorium.

Perry Ellis and Dreamius Smith each scored 23 points to lead the Falcons. Smith had nine rebounds, and Ellis had eight. Heights was down 23-17 at the end of the first quarter but got the game tied at 39 by halftime, then pulled ahead in the third quarter.

Evan Wessel added 15 points for Heights, and Terrance Moore was also in double figures with 11.

Leavenworth star and Kansas State commit Nino Williams ended his high school career with a 29-point, seven-rebound performance. Kyle Wiggins had 19 points for Leavenworth (17-7), and Grant Greenberg added 10.

Wichita Heights (22-2) will take on Blue Valley Northwest for the State title tonight at 6:15 p.m. Leavenworth will play for third place at noon, taking on Blue Valley North.

With 25 points, Tyler Brashears led Blue Valley Northwest into tonight’s championship game.

Brashears finished 7 of 10 from the floor and 3 for 4 from 3-point range. He also made 8 of 11 shots from the foul line. Morgan Smith had 11 points and five rebounds for Northwest, and Brett Fisher was also in double figures with 10 points. Brett Bond added nine points and eight boards.

Sean McClerran scored 20 points for Blue Valley North, and Weston Ehlers added 19. Those two players combined for five of the Mustangs’ eight 3-pointers. Danny Dolan had 11 points.

A monster game by Jhasmin Bowen — 17 points and 16 rebounds — led Wichita Heights to a win over Washburn Rural, the defending Class 6A champions. Heights (23-1) advanced to today’s 4 p.m. championship game against Olathe South.

Bowen was 6 of 9 from the floor, and 11 of her boards were on the offensive end. Three other Falcons were in double figures; Tahlia Pope added 13 points, and Allegria Chisom and Kamisha Richard each had 11.

The Junior Blues couldn’t come back after falling behind 18-8 after one quarter.Rural (20-4) got 11 points apiece from Alexa Bordewick, Maggie Holmberg and Erika Lane.

Olathe South (23-1) advanced to today’s championship game behind a 21-point effort from Natalie Knight and 16 points from Kelsey Balcom.

Knight finished 7 of 9 from the floor and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. Brooke Rinehart grabbed 12 rebounds for the Eagles and scored eight points.

Valerie Ortiz led Dodge City (20-4) with 17 points, and Brenna Briggs added 10. The Red Demons were scheduled to play Washburn Rural in today’s third place game at 10 a.m.
