First-round headache

Friday, March 12, 2010

MANHATTAN — The revenge Olpe was looking for was just unreachable. St. Mary’s Colgan was too aggressive defensively and too sound. And the Eagles played on their heels, which was a contributing factor to why they ended up on their backs.

For the second straight year, Olpe’s season ended with a loss to Colgan in the first round of the Class 2A State tournament, this one a painful, frustrating 63-40 thrashing Thursday at Bramlage Coliseum.

“They outcoached us and outplayed us tonight, plain and simple,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “I think we lost the game in the first three minutes. Against a team like them, you’ve got to come out and you got to get off to a good start. And put yourselves down 7-2, 9-2 early, just plays into their favor.”
