ESU women roll into Regional semis

CANYON, TEXAS — Before the South Central Regional field was announced, Emporia State coach Brandon Schneider said he wanted to play a team from outside the MIAA.

It’s easy to see why now. The Lady Hornets returned to their dominant ways in a 90-71 win over Tarleton State on Friday night to advance to the Regional semifinals.

This was more like the team that started 22-2 than than the one that limped into the postseason losing three of five.

The Lady Hornets separated themselves from the TexAnns early with a 22-0 run.

Cassondra Boston led ESU with 22 points and Alli Volkens added 21. The Lady Hornets forced 22 turnovers, held Tarleton State to 38.2 percent shooting and shot 50.8 percent themselves.

ESU will face the winner of the final game of the night between West Texas A&M and St. Mary’s. For complete coverage of Friday’s game, check Saturday’s Gazette.

Half

Emporia State used a 22-0 run to get out to a big lead and has a 49-26 advantage at halftime over Tarleton State in the first round of the South Central Regional.

ESU has made 7-of-9 3-pointers and is led by Cassondra Boston and Alli Volkens, who have nine points each. The Lady Hornets have forced 15 turnovers and held Tarleton State to 32.3 percent shooting.
