Washburn Rural crushes Maize in 1st round

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Washburn Rural’s girls played like the defending Class 6A State champion on Wednesday in dismantling Maize 76-44 in the first round of this year’s 6A tournament at White Auditorium.

The Junior Blues got 22 points from Alexa Bordewick, 19 from Maggie Holmberg and 17 from Erika Lane. Maize hung with Rural through the first quarter, after which the Junior Blues led 16-12, but Rural busted it open in the second, taking a 35-18 lead at half.

Holmberg knocked down three 3-pointers, and Bordewick was perfect in 10 tries at the free throw line, where Rural as a team went 17 of 19. Katherine Scott grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Alicia Nicholson led Maize, which finished its season 16-7, with eight points.

Washburn Rural (20-3) moves on to Friday’s semifinals, where the Junior Blues will take on Wichita Heights at 6:30 p.m.
