Spring Migration Triathlon
The Spring Migration Triathlon is taking place on April 18 at 9 a.m. at Emporia State. It will include a 400-meter swim, 20K bike and 5K Run. Registration before April 11 costs $50, and $60 after April 11. No race day entries. Register at active.com.
Rec center activities
The Lee Beran Recreation Center is offering the Spartan Baseball School, April 5-May 13 for 1st-6th graders. Monday through Thursday at Whittier Park. Registration deadline April 2. $30 fee includes camp T-shirt. For more information, contact the recreation center at 340-6300.
Junior Golf Camp
A junior golf camp for ages 7 and up will be held June 8-10 from 9 a.m.-noon at Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Learn golf techniques, golf etiquette and proper use of clubs. The camp costs $50. For more information, contact Ken Roper at (620) 342-8442 or (620) 343-0733.
Emporia Recreation Center Track Club
The Emporia Recreation Center Track Club is open for grades 1-8. Practices start May 10 and continue through June 16 on Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Emporia Middle School track. This club is designed for instructional learning and enjoyment of track and field. For information call the Emporia Recreation Center at 340-6300.
Youth track and field meet
The Emporia Track Club is holding a youth track and field meet on June 1 at 6 p.m. at Welch Stadium. There’s no pre-registration needed. Anyone can enter. Youth turkey hunt
The Council Grove 10th Annual Spring Turkey Hunt for youths ages 11-16 will be held April 3. The event is a chance to enhance opportunities for beginning turkey hunters, and to bring together individuals with an interest in spring turkey hunting. A hunter’s breakfast and lunch will be served on the day of the hunt.

Youth essay contest
The Flint Hills Gobblers are accepting entries for their eighth annual youth essay contest. The winner will receive a guided spring turkey hunt, a new shotgun and a vest loaded with turkey-hunting supplies.
Youth 16 years old and younger from Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Lyon, Morris, Osage, Wabaunsee, and Woodson counties are eligible to participate. The subject of the essay: “What have you learned about the success story of the wild turkey? What needs to be done to continue the wild turkey’s remarkable comeback?”
Participants must have completed a hunter safety course and understand what it means to be a safe and responsible turkey hunter. Please submit your essay, including your name, age, address and phone number to Gib Rhodes, 1643 360th St., Madison, KS 66860 or Shelley Sparks, 1789 Road B5, Emporia, KS 66801 by today. The winner of the contest will be notified by March 21.
Zumba classes
Family Martial Arts Center is currently offering Zumba classes. Instructor Jenna Ferguson is conducting the classes on Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. at the Family Martial Arts Center, 1009 West 12th Ave. in Emporia.

Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music and dance that creates a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness program. The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the entire body to create a one-of-a-kind workout.
Tai Chi classes
The Family Martial Arts Center, 1009 W. 12th Avenue, is again offering Tai Chi classes. Tai Chi is a less strenuous martial art that focuses on relaxation, lessening stress and improving balance and form. Classes are being held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. For more information, call 343-7575.
Women’s football
The Kansas City Storm women’s tackle football team is now accepting players for the 2010 season. You must be 18 years old to play. There are two players already traveling from Emporia to play. For more information, call Nace Wernes at (913) 685-0206.
