Emporia High’s two senior starters did everything they could to try to extend their EHS careers, but couldn’t get the Spartans to the State tournament for a third year in a row.
Despite a comeback from 16 points down and a game-tying 3-pointer by point guard Kelsey Burenheide to force overtime, the Spartans fell to Newton 60-59 in Saturday’s substate final at McPherson.
The Railers’ Sadie Minkevitch drove from the left wing and hit a go-ahead five-foot shot with less than five seconds to go in the OT, and Emporia’s attempt to set up a last shot — a long pass intended for Lindy Arndt — was deflected.
